The bulk of my property taxes go to schools. They put caps on school spending. But, do referendums. And the parents vote to borrow more and spend more. The 3 Rs have become lost in the greed. New playing fields, swimming pools, gyms, white boards, computers for each kid and bigger buildings when the birth rates are falling. I know 4 kids around me. All quit for charter schools and then quit those to home school. So what are those buildings for?
How many dont graduate either. All the schools are is to pass some government tests so the school gets more money. Teachers concentrate on teaching for those tests. The kids are told they WILL attend a pay for it college. How many actually do. And graduate. And either graduation, that will put them to work.
The sad part is we have poorly educated parents trying to teach kids at home now with covid. Either they can't or some won't be bothered.
My parents bought me books, taught me, helped me with lessons in home work. It was a given that parents were the first line to teach. Second was the village. And third was the school. Now the schools are first. And parents want the tax payer to give their precious darlings everything in public school that private schools used to offer. Guess what, every kid is not a genius. Every kid will not become a lawyer or Doctor. Nor invent a Tesla or Facebook. Your kid may end up with 3 Masters and only find a job at McDonalds. It sure would be nice if he could tell that $3 bills are fake.
