yes and no American breeders spent a lot of time line breeding (line breeding is the mating of animals that are closely related to each other) including Brown Swiss mainly to increase milk production. Probably the proper name for the breed in Switzerland would be Braunvieh. However Brown Swiss cattle DNA shows the breed originated in Afghanistan region. Hundreds of years ago the breed was farmed in Austria, Germany and Switzerland other countries in Europe like Romania I think also farmed Brown Swiss. The breed was very hardy, dual purpose like-in the were used to plough the ground, produce milk for yogurt and cheese also finally eat.
In Switzerland the Monks in Monasteries recorded the amount of cheese produced by all the cows, the breed has naturally high level of protein in it, over many years ever higher levels of casein/whey because they were often bred to increase the amount of cheese produced from the milk. I have owned Brown Swiss in Australia and New Zealand from my experience during my worldly travels particularly after I milked cows in the barn that posted in the collage file already in your thread, the image of BS cows in the snow below Peter and his Wife image. The first two images below are considered to be Braunvieh and they are breed as beef cattle by a friend of mine (Andy Rainford) here in Australia. Those first two images have little or next to no American Line Breeding blood in their pedigree, there bloodlines go directly to the first Brown Swiss / Braunvieh shipped from Switzerland to America well Canada actually. The next three images probably have lots of American fringing around in them, the first of the next three images of Brown Swiss is borrowed image of a cow that won the UK Royal Welsh Show in the UK. The next two images are both cows in New Zealand quite a lot of inbreeding in there bloodlines to
just one other comment they have a membrane that protects theirs eyes, they are very sure-footed, have big mouths and ears. The ones i had in NSW used to bellow laughably which was great to listen to as the sound vibrated echoed in the mountains
National service and clocks. Rich and powerful for reasons I don't quite understand - it's a beautiful landlocked rock. Has Switzerland been where smart people run to down the centuries? Drained northern Italy of its brains perhaps?
