Between men raised without manners and women libbers who have a chip on their shoulders, it has become every person for them selves. I like a compliment. I like manners. I also like practicality. If we are both approaching the car, nice if he opens it for me. If he has to walk all the way around and back, then it is rather silly. Unless of course I am wearing a gown or carrying stuff. It also is a time waste if he has to walk all the way around to open it ,while I sit there like a bump on a log.
Help me in or out of my coat, open the door for me to the store. Take care of me like a lady , but don't treat me like an incapable invalid either. Use common sense.
The way I was raised is manner is if you reach a door first, you hold it for the next person who is close. I have held it for women and been thanked. And had some sail through like she thinks she is the Queen without a glance. I have held it for men too.
I feel sorry for men today. They have to tip toe around because of some bi**hes who think a compliment is a put down or hit upon.
So, depends on the situation...if there is a lion lurking..YOU go first!laugh wink

I think and behave like you, too - always open the door for older people, holding it for the next person, not expecting to be treated like a princess, but like a woman if I'm with a man. I also do my share of making him feel like a man. Manners are here just to help our society and relationships among people run smoothly. They are actually a mutual agreement to put another person first to a certain extent - maybe just in a different manner.

Too much individuality makes people impolite, rude, self-centered, selfish, narcissistic... Treating everyone as your "buddy" also destroys respect among people and (when men and women are concerned) kills romance.

LeeCharming: Consider first...is the woman a lady...or the local bike Does she talk like a lady should and act like a lady should? Is she deserving of the term "LADY"?
Manners are manners, irrespective of the woman in quest.
If you treat women in a different way according to their behaviour, then you’re not genuine.

rohaan: Very valid. There ARE two sides— we must be conscious that someone could be, or have been hurt. But is it really reasonable to expect well- meaning people to know ahead of time, these things? In my observations, most stable people aren’t going to think, “ gee, I’m going to say something nice to this person, or give him/ her a kind, friendly smile, but, gee, I hope they haven’t been hurt in the past...” do you see how unreasonable that expectation would be? In other words, people just don’t work that way. I know I don’t, and I’m very, very conscientious. Gosh, how awkward getting through life would be! Shall we have a culture where, say this doctor, would have to say, “ hello Ms Smith. May I tell you something kind”? No one does this. It is unfair to expect people to walk on eggshells just because someone MIGHT have been hurt . It’s like taking away their personality to be spontaneously polite. Don’t you see how ridiculously unfair that is? We can’t “ know” that someone is walking wounded, and it’s not cricket to expect it.
dunno I feel people's emotions when I'm near them but I guess not everyone is wired that way ...

cryptorchid: whoever gets to the door first should open it. simple. if you like having the door opened for you, pause while the other reaches it first. in other cases, if one has their hands full, be kind and open the door. it's a courtesy thing
Women have done for me before and I have done for women before...but I have also opened doors for men....you won't always get a thanks...when you do something kind for another...but that don't reflect on you doing good for anotherwink
