Although it wasn’t my “ strong point” in college, I did study, and work for many years, with the psychiatric population. There are so many variables. There are many religious groups who “frown” on chemical adjustments, for spiritual reasoning of one type or another. But let’s use our brain cells ( it’s really OK to..) and parse this in de facto. If you have a gash wound, you clean and sterilize it, and likely bandage it. If a personality disorder is identified, and the underlying cause is an absence or lack of lithium ( which naturally occurs in the body), then the solution is to give Lithium as a drug. There is no more “ evil” in this than dressing a bleeding wound. It’s just another aspect of health. I know you didn’t present your thread as such, but this is such a frequent “ mistake” people make in judging mental health, I felt compelled to offer my experience in studies and employment. **
