A good way to get information if you have the time is to shoot up the person with large amounts of heroin or meth everyday for a couple of months, then one day keep it from them and tell them the only way they will get their fix is to tell you what you want to know. They will be well addicted by this point and will go through nasty withdrawals much worse than anything you can do to them.

That could work but it would be costly and take too much time. Whereas a sledgehammer, a saw, pliers all would work faster that getting the person addicted.

True enough lol, a sledge hammer to the jewels would be pretty effective. The addiction would work more so for those who can endure the sledge hammer, I seen addicts (formerly upstanding people) do some wild, crazy, disgusting, and downright wrong things when they were withdrawing and trying to get their fix. The threat of torture is usually enough to break the strongest, but as Dan said the thought of your kids or loved ones coming to harm is fearful enough also..
