In the Uk, if you pass your driving test using "gears" as we call them, then you can drive an automatic car/truck as well as a gear car/truck etc...If you decide to just drive and automatic and take your driving test using an automatic gear stick, then you're not allowed to drive a car/truck that has gears. Luckily for me, I passed my driving test using "gears" way back in 1979, so I can drive either. I know that most people in America drive automatics. I did however found it strange that most automatic cars/trucks in America have the auto gear sticks on the side of the steering wheel
I much prefer an auto. I drove autos in the Uk for years. It just wasn't the "in thing" in the Uk years ago as they were classed as a "lazy" car

No fun driving a car having an automatic transmission barefoot.
My 1949 Chevy truck. Like to see someone try to steal it. Starter button on floors. Why wont key start it? Had a 61 Ford convert. Changed to stick, auto read end. Spent an afternoon trying to learn to drive it. Ran out of gas. Walked back to house. Husband said where are you..where you left me. Finally learned how.

I was under the impression that all American cars/trucks had the auto gear stick on the side of the steering wheel? It's illegal in the Uk and Spain (not sure of any other Countries) to drive barefoot or with "flip flops" on. You have to have a "strap" on the back of your shoes. Not that anyone takes any notice. The Guardia/Police can't see your feet anyway
Can't wait to start driving again but it would have to be an auto. 10yrs is too long. Been watching my daughter driving and which way to go So confused with the Spanish and English side of the road now I've not driven a car in years
When I got my license ( 1955 ) , part of the driving test was to park going up a hill, set the emergency brake, and then release the parking brake without rolling backward, and driving forward without killing the engine, in a " stick " transmission car. I suppose if you let the car roll backward, you failed. I don't know, 'cause I got the license my first try.
I got my license driving an automatic. Bought a car from my brother- sight unseen - and it was a stick. I had to learn it or walk the 3 hour drive to where I lived at the time. I drove a stick then for 14 years - when my oldest was able to apply for a permit, I switched back. My youngest is almost ready for his road test and then back to the stick I go. No, I don't have the patience to teach the kids to drive a stick. Some things just aren't meant to be.

I've never driven an automatic, have I missed out on anything?

In Belgium the most cars are with a manual transmission. I guess only 20% of the car drivers choose for a automatic transmission. I also drive with a manual transmission ;) The "older" generation choose for a automatic transmission.
No one who has the driving gene in their body would touch an automatic...
Response time too slow. The joy of dropping a gear (or two),flooring the acelerator and hearing the engine drone as it kicks up the power... is GONE.... And that finely tuned nuanced driving you get is dulled to a boring (euch) sunday drive...
and lets face it..with an automatic you're not really driving the car are you..you're just a passenger in a car that's driving you....god how boring is that.....
