rent2own: When I got my license ( 1955 ) , part of the driving test was to park going up a hill, set the emergency brake, and then release the parking brake without rolling backward, and driving forward without killing the engine, in a " stick " transmission car. I suppose if you let the car roll backward, you failed. I don't know, 'cause I got the license my first try.
it's called a hill start here rent2own (I think you might be in the US) ...via clutch control , there's a pinch point where the car engine is is pulling against the roll, just enough for the car to stay stationary on the hill when the handbrake is realised. Most drivers here can do it without needing the handbrake and yeh it's still part of the driving test here...a crucial part as well. Most newer cars now have hill start assist butit can get in the way so I try to do it myself before the assist kicks in, that's a skill I don't want to lose....all these new features on cars can be handy but many of them will dull ones senses eventually and create some very bad drivers.....
I'm in the middle of teaching my daughter to drive, beside a lake Lol ah it's going well though, we didn't kill each other yet...fun times, not a lazy car like them Yanks have
snowlynx: I've never driven an automatic, have I missed out on anything?
Not a darn thing. My car now has a pretend manual transmission that I can switch over to when I want. I can manually gear down and the like but there is no clutch to pop. Also don't have to worry about rolling back down hills on the get go.

I drive an automatic now but I did learn to drive a stick shift in the past. It's one of those things like falling off a horse. All you need to do is get in the car and it all comes back to you.

Try a stick 48 Dodge in the mountains. PLEASE do not have stop sign at the top of this street. My plow truck had an auto. There is enough going on when plowing snow without a clutch to boot. Autos now are like...15 speeds? Huh? What do the tranis look like, so many gears is resembles something built with legos? How many times can a car shift anyway? I crack up with movies..guy is racing to outrun another car...and shifts. To WHAT? Autos are nice when old. Enough to keep track of in town.My car, your car, his car, turns, lanes, lights. And that jerk who thinks if he kisses your back bumper at the stop light, he will get there faster.
The first car I remember my parents having was a 1948 Dodge... with "Fluid Drive" ... ... I remember I liked washing it for my dad, I did a good job... ...
Brought the 48 back, still own..business coupe. Also own a 4 door 47 with suicide doors.Gonna sell that one tho. Used to drive a 51 Desoto with fluid drive. Those are some WEIRD tranis!! Cool car. Had metal dash to floor. And the big conquistador hood emblem. I can't remember the trani now. When cold, use first. After warmed up, second to third?
