We had Rhode Island Reds and Leghorns. The hens of both breeds were great egg layers and the Reds roosters grew big and plump and were good for roasting. We also had Guinea Fowl, a relative of a chicken, they looked like a partridge and were very noisy.

Rhode Island Red is popular breed and a cross of brown Leghorn

My Grandfather had a chicken coop and his chickens laid very large brown eggs and had brown feathers. I don't know what breed they were but I looked it up on Bing and I think they were Barnevelder chickens, a Dutch breed of chickens that are able to withstand the cold winters of Connecticut.
