Tiger_Moth: You obviously haven't my understood my thread at all.

There is a huge difference in farming animals that are killed humanely and the indiscriminate slaughter of millions of wild life for one small part of its anatomy then leaving it to die .

Just a small sample of how these creatures are left after their fins are removed to make someone a bowl of soup. You find this acceptable
Whats sickening to me... the people that want and eat shark soup... don't care at all about that! ... very mad

I'm practically a vegetarian, have been for 25 years, I have no problem getting a complete source of protein without eating animals...

We are discussing sharks. Go make your own thread if you are that bothered about animal cruelty.

I suggest you get an education about proper zoo life. too as most of these animals are being saved from extinction and aren't caged.

Here's an example.

Tiger_Moth: Is shark fin soup destroying the shark population.?

A rising demand for shark fin soup is wiping out more than 73 million sharks every year, fuelling a practice labelled the marine “gold rush”. Finning, when a shark’s fin is sliced off while at sea and the body dumped back into the ocean, is rampant in many regions – fins are one of the most expensive seafood items, ending up mostly in soup.

I realise that yes we breed, hunt and kill animals for our existence but this to me is abhorrent when a shark's fins are cut off while still alive then tossed back into the ocean. Fins are for sharks not for soup.

What's your take on this ?
Totally against this practice, and I do eat meat...so not necessary. Can’t they embrace the Native American mission of “using the whole animal”? For instance, when a bison was killed, it provided food, tools, shelter, clothing...I am also adamantly against the fishing hobby of “catch and release”. WTF?? I just don’t get mangling their mouth/gills and tossing them back...use the darn fish, ffs!

At first glance it seems a bit of a waste to not eat the whole thing but theres more to eat it than that. I don't fancy the idea of eating something that eats people. My DNA says it's one step away from cannibalism.

Hi Rohug

First and foremost how's the boy doing now he's back with Daddy and also are you ok.wave

This so called delicacy is one of the most expensive soups on a menu but as the meat is high in mercury one would have to limit the intake.

Talking of bison I see that they are slowly being introduced back into the wild and making a comeback from almost extinction.

Sport fishing is huge in the UK and we have special lakes full of carp .I must admit I don't like it but they do allow the fish to survive. Some just fish for river trout and salmon and the sport of a fight with a pike but most are respectful with regards the fish.handshake

I don't think the shark has any idea it's caught a human do you and the balance of human life against shark life is minimal in comparison.

Possibly 80 to 100 humans per year and definitely 80,000 to 100,000 sharks is a bit off kilter.

One step away from cannibalism or perhaps it simply feels wrong to eat a fellow hunter. Definitely upending the food chain in some way our practice of making sure that the docile get eaten. Not eating our own kind that is perhaps the cornerstone of human achievement.

Could easily be the reason one of my ancestors became a farmer. Sharks are not cattle, why can't they eat what innocently grew up in a field like a civilised person?

My out take on this will not be judged by some film made & paid for some animal rights more so by peta, just another name for Green Peace to raise money, from animal lovers by paying someone to kill a animal in a cruel way, film it & turn it on for the world to see & let the money roll in from the public to stop it by sending donations, I remember in mid 70s when Greenpeace ship came into my home port in Canada, to report they were shot at by Russian sealers, the ship had 5 bullet holes in the ships side & wheelhouse window shot out, when RCMP did their investigation, the officer in charged asked capt Watson of the Greenpeace ship, how many men came aboard his ship he replied they never they were shooting at them about 500 feet away from their ship, only thing he could not respond to was when the RCMP pointed out the shots were fired from on the ship out & same with the window, the broken glass was on the deck outside the wheel house, shot came from inside the wheel house, & yet it few days after the world heard about Russian ship shooting at Greenpeace ship but for some reason it was cut short, So i am wondering about the shark fins, way i see it could it be made for donations to stop it & another thing the fins make good soup, i can t say, but i have eaten shark meat, so i am sure the whole shark is used also for the fishermen that fish them even if the fin is worth more money than it s meat, so why just toss it over if there is a few dollars to be made if some country eat fin soup i am sure they also eat shark meat also, even if some animal rights group don t want the public know that & the sharks death is for the fin only, like the saying goes, believe half you see & nothing you hear, more so if money is involved

This has nothing to do with Greenpeace and no the meat is not used to that extent as it's high in mercury as I stated. Ever seen tinned shark.??????

I saw this on a T.V. programme with Simon Reeve ,a British author and travel presenter who also makes travel documentaries. He was visiting a country where the locals line snag these creatures haul them in and cut the fins off while they are alive then toss the sharks back into the sea.

There is loads of documentation out there and I was totally unaware of this practise until today and it just shocked me.

73 to a 100 million a year is a lot of shark fins . Just saying.

I posted the wrong figure in post 31 it's millions not thousands.doh

Glad to hear it!
And so am I! cheers

I also get plenty of protein from other sources.

I see more and more meat free delicious products here, in the supermarkets.
There must be more demand for it.

Howdy. Your note brought a big smile— “The Boy” is just as rambunctious as ever, and most definitely ecstatic at being home. ( he is ultra super- spoiled; top of the line kitten/young adult food...here’s a ‘plug’ for SCIENCE DIET, same with the very best litter available here, and toys that he actually plays with ( until they’re torn to bits) sleeps with me through the night, purring softly, bounces through the house like a flying squirrel in the daytime...play- fighting with me, plays hide and seek all the time. I’m trying to teach him to “shake hands”. He “gets” it, but still is aloof about it. A treat helps...I can’t imagine ever being separated from “Skedaddle” again. Not even one day...honestly. I’m a lost man without him. Ok, where were we?laugh

For me it happened over 20 years ago, all of a sudden. I never gave it any thought.
It's like if a switch just turned itself off.

First it was meat, then, some time later, I couldn't eat any fish either.

And, to tell you the truth, I never missed it and I felt better for it too.
