I no longer eat anything that's been brutally slaughtered or boiled alive if I'm aware of it ...

I go through phases of being almost vegan, mostly vegetarian but currently eating chicken and eggs ... when I eat meat too often I feel "saturated" by its energy and almost feel indigestion just at the thought of it ...

Tiger_Moth: Many are farmed especially for the market these days and are deep frozen before boiling. Still not my idea of a dinner though.

Unfortunately not all people want to live on plant food and farming is a way of life and livelihood for many people.
I love lobster, which is protected for size and eggs, on the rare occasion I get a live one I despatch it with a hatpin through the brain before boiling it, sneaking up on it from behind so it doesn't know anything.grin

Tiger_Moth: What have dogs got to do with shark fin soup.
I just wanted to show you that it's not only sharks, but anywhere people meat animals there's something rotten.

I didn't need showing ,I'm fully aware of how people treat animals ,but this thread is about sharks losing their fins to make some rich guy happy with his bowl of soup not animal cruelty in general.handshake

See #29. I think he is referring to some cultures using dogs as pets, and then food. ( forgive me, folks, it’s a difficult thing to even mention, but I’m just answering the question...) thanx..hug

Tiger_Moth: Is shark fin soup destroying the shark population.?
I'd say a much bigger problem for sharks is the over-fishing that we're doing. very mad

The answer is to farm sharks , use the whole fish . Making it against the law drives demand , it would give shark fin soup an exclusiveness , nothing drives price better than that . Shark is already used in NZ for fish and chips where the quality and taste is masked .

Hi epirb,

My post was not anti shark fishing in general otherwise as a fish eater that would make me a hypocrite

This plundering and destruction of any sharks in our oceans getting out of hand. especially using one part of the fish then leaving it to die , hence the laws to protect endangered species.

I agree with the farming .We farm salmon etc so why not sharks though due to their size this might not be practical.handshake

Good point but there are also rules about over fishing. We are in dispute with the E.U over this very subject.handshake

Laws will not stop it , only thing that stops a comercial activity is the lack of return . That is where the farming would step in , to undermine the wild catch . Most of the wild catch would be small sharks rather than the 18 footers , so would farmed shark .Its bulldust that fins make the best soup rather than the tail or nose , that would be perception . If the pink can be put back into farmed salmon so can the taste be put back into a shark fin or any other shark body part of any age . NZ farms deer by the million , deer industry is very careful to maintain the "feral fiction" for marketing . Farmed deer pretty much killed the wild deer recovery industry , 20 years later wild deer are a problem , prior to the 90's wild deer had been hunted to very low numbers Same market dynamic would work for shark . While I'm sitting here the local fishing competition is on this weekend , few years ago it used to be called the Akitio Shark Hunt , not any more , not very PC .

What he says is true in essence, it just ignores the extreme cruelty in chopping sharks fins off and throwing them backprofessor

As he says if the demand wasn't there then the supply would dry up, so he hasn't ignored the issue completely.

I suppose you could use that as an excuse for many cruel activities, like killing elephants for their tusks.
