Yesterday I was in the grocery store. I took all the items out of my basket and put them on the conveyor belt for the cashier to pack into the bag that I brought with me so I don't have to use store plastic bags.

I'm in this store 2 or 3 times a week but have never gone to this particular cashier.

She said "I can't pack your items in a bag that came from outside because I have a 91 year old mother and I can't take a chance with Covid". She said "I will pack them in a store plastic bag". WOT !

I said "You are willing to pack everything that I touched into a plastic bag from the store even though you don't have gloves on. That doesn't make sense." She's still glaring at me.

She looked at me as if I had the gall to ask her to pack the groceries in my bag. So I said I will do the packing which I don't mind doing because I don't want certain things crushed but there wasn't a place for me to balance the bag so I struggled. I paid her and off I went to the store manager.

When I told the manager what happened she said when Covid started they had a policy not to use bags that come from outside the store but now it's up to each cashier if they want to stick to that policy.

I shop in four different grocery stores and I have never been told that the cashier isn't allowed to use my grocery bag that I brought into the store.

Did this woman have a bug up her @#$%^&*?
Did she get out of the wrong side of the bed?
Did she just want to be obstinate towards me?

Things are out of control. Many people, like the drowning man, are grasping at straws trying to find a vent. Of course it doesn’t make sense to handle hundreds of items a day others have touched, and then get freaked out by one bag. It’s her way of coping, goofy or not. I use a “carry-along” or my own knapsack. They can’t pack it to suit me, anyway, so I do it myself. It’s a win-win. I try to remember there are bigger fish to fry.

I agree Track. It just didn't make sense that she would touch all the items I touched and would put them in a store plastic bag but wouldn't put them in the reusable bag that I brought into the store.mumbling

well, not touching things from outside the store. But how's that for customers.
When I come in to buy some beer and I pick some cans, but then see a better brand or a cheap deal, I might return the ones I allready picked up, touching them with my hands, and if I have covid and another customer comes in and picks up the cans I just put back, he will have covid too.
So theneverybody should wear rubber gloves in the supermarket, but wait, if I have covid, I need my one hand to put the glove on the other hand, so the outside of that glove is also infected.

Conclusion: There is no solution. Social distancing won't help, goin' in quarantaine when you have covid, well not everybody notices he or she has covid. Only way to avoid getting it is get supplies for a year at your house and stay indoors for a year, but who can live such a life?

It's a response to trauma, to chaos, to feeling powerless in a situation. A little island of tranquility, a bubble of perfect order where in stark contrast to everything else things happen completely on your terms. It's how a lot of computer games got started.

I think you are missing the point Lilli. The point I am making is the cashier didn't want to put groceries that I touched into a reusable grocery bag but she WOULD put them in a plastic bag from the store.

I prefer to bag my own groceries but the grocery stores in my area don't have a space for customers to be able to do that.

Possibly much different in your neck of the woods, but here (U.S.) at least before the pandemic, it is quite common for supermarkets to “pack” customers’ items, AND, take them out to the vehicle. Larger, discount stores, such as WINCO, have long saved costs by having customers bag their own, but that is exception, not rule...handshake

This pandemic has made us all crazy.
Our lives have turned upside down and our "normal" reactions and thoughts just aren't so normal anymore.
I remind myself to not take things personal as we all our doing the best we can in this crazy state of affairs, even when our "best" that day isn't really very good, and to give out tons and tons of grace.
Yes, things don't make sense, but it's how some are holding onto a thin strand of sanity and we can help everyone by simply smiling and giving out that grace.

It's about the cashiers attitude KB. She is worried about bringing home Covid germs to her 91 year old mother and I understand her concern. However, she should be wearing gloves but she wasn't. All day she touches groceries that customers put on the conveyer belt. She rings up the groceries and puts them in a plastic bag that the store provides yet she wouldn't put them in a reusable bag.

The purpose of using a reusable grocery bag is to help to save the environment. Oceans are full of plastic garbage that people throw into the ocean from their boats. The fish, turtles, etc. get caught in tangles of the bags and fishing lines.

Styrofoam is non-biodegradable and non-recyclable. According to Washington University, Styrofoam takes 500 years to decompose; it cannot be recycled, so the Styrofoam cups dumped in landfills are there to stay.

It takes 500 (or more) years for a plastic bag and styrofoam to degrade in a landfill. They don't break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.

Let's say you have to do a huge grocery shopping. You wind up with 15+ plastic bags of groceries. When you get home you take the groceries out of the bags throw the bags into the kitchen trash can. When your kitchen trash can is full you take it out to the large can in your driveway. A couple days later the garbage truck dumps your trash into the truck. The truck goes up and down the street doing that for every resident on that street. That process happens all over America. That is a lot of plastic bags that will fill the dump and won't be broken down for 500 years. As the bags breakdown toxins are released into the ground which eventually lead to your backyard or the farmer who grows produce that you will buy and put into a plastic bag. confused

If you use a reusable grocery bag over and over you never have to be concerned about toxins being released into the ground while they are in the landfill. You never have to be concerned about wildlife, fish or even whales being caught in a plastic bag.

And I wouldn't have had a nasty interaction from this cashier.

It's called 'caronaphobia' and many of us are affected by it to some degree.
I was at a little woden shack like shop by a canal last week which seved hot drinks and snacks through a small opening. The owner, obviously had a bad case of caronaphobia judging by the way he'd went about his business.
He'd set up a pulley and belt system so he could stay at the back of the shack, serve and dispense change while keeping at least ten feet away from his customers.
He even sprayed the fiver pound note I'd put on the belt with disinfectant. ...laugh
