galrads: What do you think of Ubuntu? Real, fabricated, good thing, not possible in corporate countries ?

An anthropologist showed a game to the children of an African tribe ... He placed a basket of delicious fruits near a tree trunk and told them: The first child to reach the tree will get the basket.

When he gave them the start signal, he was surprised that they were walking together, holding hands until they reached the tree and shared the fruit! When he asked them why you did that when every one of you could get the basket only for him!

They answered with astonishment: Ubuntu.

"That is, how can one of us be happy while the rest are miserable?" Ubuntu in their civilization means: (I am because we are).

That tribe knows the secret of happiness that has been lost in all societies that transcend them and which consider themselves civilized societies ....... !!
yeah
speaking of Ubuntu , my mind drifted to my operating system, Linux ,,,i need a new monitor and im not gonna pay more than 200 bucks for it grin

robplum: I put on a windows hard drive for a friend who had a habit of stuffing windows operating system, took her five to stuff Ubuntu, was good computer and worked well. AND Freee
Unfortunately now days rootkits and some some specically designed malware for Linux and more specifically for Ubuntu OS are quiet nasty one.
Since 2 years ago i switched from Winzoz to Linux BackBox which is one of the many version of Ubuntu, the ine i use is created specifically for hacking and testing systems, but can handle pretty much anything.
Suggestion for all that are thinking to change OS in their laptop and PC,Pic the specific Ubuntu flavor suits your need, after having installed it,install what is called Honey Pot its a fair tough program that allow your system to send out anything also make it difficult to hack your laptop coz restrict pretty much the way in your laptop or PC.
All OS from Winzoz to Solaris(Java) are all derivate of linux and if i am not mistaken was created in one university in california around 1980.
Now days Ubuntu born after Debian have become way easier to install and easy to use theme, obvious safety of your system depend on the user.
Think about changing your system folks.
cheers cheers

Re: UBUNTU OS.

I've been scrounging for inexpensive or even discarded or donated computers and parts for years, only to reassemble them into a complete and improved computer system and then (because I have no room or use for them) I donate them to kids, moms, vets, churches and even tribes. Over 200 machines have found new owners this way, and I don't charge for them.

Once Windows deprecated Windows 7 and the board and expansion card manufacturers took all drivers (the specialized software needed to allow a given device to work in a computer), offline, it was a choice between the landfill for my unassembled inventory or Linux.

There simply aren't that many different kinds of Windows in existence and even then, still even fewer are in use at any one time (since it follows a progression, ex: Win95, Win98, Millenium, Vista, Win7, etc..).

Linux on the other hand, because it is a spinoff of the UNIX operating system (thanks, Linus Tovalds, thus Lin-Ux), it is free and re-spun and tweaked by countless nerds. In my view, Windows in meant to be all things to all users, but Linux is For Nerds By Nerds.

Trying to make the transition to Linux has been painful. Even though installing and using Linux has gotten much easier than it was in the past, I have yet to find a version, (or in Linux-Nerd parlance, a "distro") that is as intuitive and user-friendly as Windows (7).

Within the Linux universe there are many groupings, and two of the largest ones are DEBIAN and the other UBUNTU. Having loaded and tried between 12 and 15 versions of Linux, I have found that UBUNTU has one major advantage over DEBIAN in that it has much better device recognition than does DEBIAN.

This means, if you have a sound card, a web cam and so forth, while it may be immediately recognized and usable in UBUNTU, the same might not be true in DEBIAN-based versions.

As previously mentioned i set up a computer with Ubuntu operating system, it worked fine until some clown expert fiddled with its setup...

With Win 7 you can buy disk (eBay) that installs Windows 7 (a disk for 32bit and or other for 64bit) that allows you to register the correct operating system code that is found on the label stuck on the back of (say) Toshiba laptop, the disk allows you to registers on install same as is (hidden) written into the laptop registry when it was new. And the disk will install Sp1 update.
You need to install correct registry code or Microsoft will when you online detect it and screw the computer.

Even so you then need to shutdown Windows update, insure that Google Chrome is not installed and Windows Internet Explorer is disabled in Turn on Turn of Windows features (program Start .
You should install good antivirus like Malwarebytes Premium...

If you want to *not* use Ubuntu and keep using a Windows-compatible OS, then you might consider a Russian open-source alternative, which is largely compatible with Windows: ReactOS.

The problem with that is that you are still beholden to Windows-based drivers, which are being systematically eradicated by Board and expansion card manufacturers, and only available on iffy Third-party sites.

It's the main reason I am using Ubuntu in some installs, but I have yet to find any Linux distro which is a easy to use as Windows 7.

More's the pity.

In response to: but I have yet to find any Linux distro which is a easy to use as Windows 7.
Have you looked at BSD OS? I've been using GhostBSD for a while now and find it excellent on an old computer, fast and reasonably intuitive.

There are several versions FreeBSD, OpenBSD etc

Being closer to Unix than Linux BSD doesn't need any anti-virus, worth a look if you want a decent OS without frills and BS that Microsoft add. Fast too.
But you need some experience in Linux to appreciate it fully.

I just wonder ,
Why such meaning can be realised by some tribal kids but most adult intellectuals all over the world , either can not realise it or simply refuse to realise !!!! dunno

rizlared: Have you looked at BSD OS?.
I'll take a look at it. If nothing else I have plenty of testbed machines to try it out on.

I've tested anywhere from 12 to 15 Linux distros... mostly those called 'lightweight' or 'revive that old laptop.'

So far, the best results came from LXLE and Q4OS / XP4Q.

Even so, neither of them quite fill the bill.
