bodleing2: For a lie to be told there has to be a lier and someone being lied to., no?
I believe that our thoughts are at times independent of us....like an intruder...ie the liar.
Telling the person they are invading, lies...ie the one being lied to.

If I as a person never did a wrong doing...which is pretty much impossible.
But for some reason I fell into a depressive state....and kept telling myself that I was a horrible person.
Then is that the truth because I thought it or a n intrusive thought that has nothing to do with my own being.??

pedro27: You spend your entire life with your thoughts, so sometimes it's hard to tell if your long-term thought patterns are unhelpful. But if you have high-functioning anxiety, chances are your brain is lying to you pretty much constantly.

Thoughts are wrong which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mild depression is the way to be right all the time, or more accurately, the least wrong all the time.

Well I still stand my description.
Incorrect thoughts and lying thoughts are pretty much the same thing.
Plus there is the thing of lying to one's self.
But I guess that notion goes over some people's heads.

I lie is a deliberate deception. How can you deliberately deceive yourself?

Of course you can.....people do it every day....
To ease their minds of worry , people with depression or some form of mental illness do it all the time.
I don't see how you seem to think it's a foreign concept that people can lie to themselves.

Staying in marriages thay are no longer satisfying.
Tricking yourself that your happy to be single when not.
Etc etc etc confused

I was originally trying to find a separation between self, me, my, I. When we say myself, what exactly do we mean. It's really just a figure of speech, but is there a separation between self and I? Do I create the thoughts or the self. It's an important distinction.
Who is in control of thought, the observer of thought, 'I' cannot create the thought. If thought is autonomous, the self cannot exist as anything but thought.

Bodleing2, you're way too smart for the average cs'r. Or just being overly academic. You know the term fooling oneself is good enough for the rest of us. M e I don't even know what the thread is about to be honest... So I'm going..lol

Well from how I see it...thoughts are formed in our subconscious....all day everyday...its our conscious brain that recognise our thoughts, and that's only a fraction of what our subconscious forms.
It's up to our conscious brain to control the thoughts we recognise.
This is where mental health comes in.
When the brain isn't firing right then our thoughts can consume us.
This is where people who are strong of mind don't understand how anyone can believe a lying thought, but sadly suicidal people believe the lies their thoughts are telling them.
That's the difference between someone believing their thoughts and knowing how to control them.

If thay makes any sense.

As for the me , I self....that's too deep for me.

"The doctrine of anatman (Sanskrit; anatta in Pali) is the core teaching of Buddhism. According to this doctrine, there is no "self" in the sense of a permanent, integral, autonomous being within an individual existence. What we think of as our self, the "me" that inhabits our body, is just an ephemeral experience.

Anatta, or absence of self, is one of the three characteristics of existence. The other two are anicca, the impermanence of all being, and dukkha, suffering. We all suffer or fail to find satisfaction in the physical world or within our own minds. We are constantly experiencing change and attachment to anything is futile, which in turn leads to suffering. Underlying this, there is no permanent self, it is an assembly of components that is subject to constant change. The right understanding of these three seals of Buddhism is part of the Noble Eightfold Path."

What can be simpler than that!
