Certain dating was always done by writing. The good old fashioned love letter!
In these more enlightened digital times, how many write letters now? They possibly just 'email' instead, as faster for long-distant relationships!
While email has (mostly) fallen out of use, thanks to the instant messenger (or even the many and varied livechat systems currently available, including video calling), time has actually remained exactly the same and although this immediate contact method has a distinct advantage over the delayed letter (in that it arrives as soon as it's sent) there's something to always remember if involved with anyone living far away in another country... Timezones!
When one person is getting up, the other could be going to bed, or even asleep (+ vice-versa) They could also be busy at work, while you're not.
Having retired to my bedroom yesterday (unusually early at 9pm, but just chilling out listening to some newly downloaded music on my phone), after hearing a great track, I decided to send a quick message about it to someone special.
Had she heard this? If not, would she like to? Ah.....
Ooops!
(It was 4am when the instant message arrived. Unlikely those 'old' love letters caused anyone to be disturbed quite so easily!)
A suggestion of enabling the dual clock display on the phone proved to be an excellent idea, and possibly something anyone in a similar situation with a long distance relationship might also find of great use too.
The modern digital messenger will always deliver any love letter right away, but sometimes a slight delay is rather a good thing to have!
Anyone else's timezone dating stories thus much appreciated! Or recalling your own love letters. Do you write any now, or maybe have kept special ones?
EtherealDude: Postcards yes, wow haven't sent any of those for ages
Such a nice surprise it must be to receive rather than the usual phone based junk sent now.
Not ideal for love letters (usually always read before delivery!) but yeah I'm going to retro-return to postcards. Thanks for that
No worries, Yes they are great, picking them up from the floor when the postie drops it off still gives a great buzz, and they usually end up on the wall as decoration...

I used to have a wall almost competely covered in postcards from all over the world. Loved getting them from far flung places, but they had to be posted. If someone who was goung to a far off country said they would bring a postcard back for me, I'd say, it has to be posted to get on my wall. Not sure why, but there you go.

It's the same if someone types me a letter, I'd rather the penmanship than I corrected text.. I used to Dj in my local and met loads of people from around the world, I would always ask them to send me a postcard when they got home, got a lot addressed to the bar with "To Mr Dj Dino" loved getting them..
rohaan: Got a postcard from a friend in Patagonia—then Galapagos...how cool
Yes, I had one from a friend out climbing in Patagonia....the Galapagos is cool though?? I didnt mind if they were from somewhere just ten miles down the road, so long as they'd been posted.

My understanding about The Galapagos is that they’re very interesting. The down-side is that they are administered quite strictly, can’t do this, can’t do that, can’t touch this, can’t touch that, etc...

Not sure where the question marks came from, should have been....
