Rather cynical, but for the most part, correct. In my youth, and slightly post- beat-nik/hippie era, the “mood” was moving toward a better world, a better planet, better human relationships…ie, the hit songs were “Top Of The World”, “Born Free”, “What The World Needs Now, Is Love, Sweet Love”, “The Impossible Dream”, “Climb Every Mountain”, “Imagine”, and so on. I started out in life (the workforce) very optimistically- everyone around me was friendly, helpful, cheerful, encouraging. I would see all this shatter through the years, into harsh competitiveness, petty jealousies, hostile work environments, nasty game-playing, and unfair employee-employer relationships. My natural bend was, and is, to try again, pray, be patient with people and situations. But the world has been in decay since Adam.

I agree with some of your points there,

Everything must have felt like an improvement after the war. Like a garden of Eden almost. But unfortunately for us the fates are cyclic. Good times make terrible and precious and very, very terrible people. If you want to build the garden of Eden one must first be blown to bits.

I fear that being blown to bits is the only way not to scorn the tranquility of the greatest generation. They weren't trying to meditate or anything, they'd spend hours doing nothing content to be that bored. Patience becomes you and this is what built Eden before it was torn down for the entertainment purposes of baby boomers.

Not to say that everybody has it easy we've reached that level of health and safety where mosh pits become attractive. You don't need to watch the film fight club to see what's going on. People are starting to, at least from a distance, need something to fear to desire that sense of grit.

And it's just like many relationships that cannot be maintained without a good argument. Sure there are soulmates who don't need this antagonism to stay together, but for the most part we do.

And that's playing out in the pandemic. On the one hand we have the precious who see covid as really bad - which is an insult to those who know what really bad is - and then we have the disagreeable underbelly who are out to make themselves look hard no matter what happens. The latter are insulting by another way. How much of a contrarian have you gotta be to turn down a vaccine when you're fat and 65?

And then both sides see dead people that just happen to fit their political agenda. If you're anti-vax then you'll know someone killed by a vaccine, and if you're pro-vax you'll know even more people who died of covid. How very coincidental.

Sometimes it would be nice when every topic posted by people or comments made to topics would not be constantly focused on COVID and Govt conspiracy theories. I would fancy a time when the hippies were tuned in and dropped out or dropping acid. We are the kids of that generation of hippies and free thought when life was groovy and the only thing important then was complaining about Vietnam.

COVID today has become our new modern Vietnam it seems. For 30 years we had to put up with Iraq and the gulf war now are we going to complain about COVID for the next 30 years?
