I my little world it should be given. I can always withdraw it if I feel it's not deserved.
Even if I don't respect you as a person, or respect your opinions, I will always respect your right to be the person you want to be. And I will always respect your right to have your own opinions.

Im just thinking out loud here is there more than one form of respect Initial respect when you meet someone and deserved respect based on their values, character etc etc
you dont know if her hubby has a gun and is trigger happy so you will do her only in missionary position-with respect

. Respect is the best we can give to the other person. As a human being it will show how we regard the others, the way we deal and talk to them. It is always given and it means that we are treating each other very well.

Courtesy isn't earned it's a superficial gesture extended to everyone. Or at least it should be. It's more like charm.
Respect is when you're impressed I think. Meeting and maybe even surpassing the expectation of behaviour. To me that means it's earned.
Courtesy, politeness, respect... Are they interchangeable?
Courtesy and politeness can be extended to others even when it's not reciprocated, mainly because it's a reflection of who we are and project onto others. In my opinion...
Respect sometimes gets confused with behaving in a particular way out of fear of the consequences. Fearing God's wrath, punishment by the law or parents or teachers, fearing "warnings" at work. It is said to respect the law or the rules but often it's only done to avoid penalties rather than because of highly regarding the rule or law or person.
But for me respect carries a capital R. It embodies a high regard for that or whom I feel respect for. My perception of it at least ... I might even respect the right for someone to behave like a a*hole I may respect some people for who they are and the emotions they feel; ideas for what they represent; elements for their magnificence and power, animals for their authenticity; particular people for their brilliance (even if I don't like them); friends for their resilience and presence; families for their togetherness...

If I think he has a gun, I'm not ending up in the missionary position

I think they are not interchangeable, and am with you on the R. You didn't answer the question as to whether you give it or it has to be earned.

I give courtesy and politeness and feel respect for people's needs or rights to this or that ...
Well, having given it a bit of thought, I believe that I respect people outright usually. I don't feel anyone has to prove anything to anyone, or to me, in order to deserve respect. I might choose not to "hang out with someone" if their choices don't resonate with me, but that doesn't mean they are less deserving.
For me respecting others has a rather positive aspect. It means I can relate to or interact with many people from different walks of life. An then I can go back to my cosy home and close the door.... I do like alone time

I get you. I give reapect from the outset and if needs be I can withdraw it. If I expect someone to earn my respect, I feel I'm starting them at a disadvantage ...

I'm a big alone time fan too
Well thinking somebody needs to earn my respect implies I perceive them as inferior and they need to prove they're not... I learned a long time ago not to make such assumptions ...
