gonelikethewimd: My relationship with my Dad is very complicated. As a child, he was a great father...taught me how to swim, ride a bike, fly a kite, build treehouses, and to look at the skies through a telescope.

Then he found religion....and with that became a stern and angry man....who did not laugh or show affection.

Anyway, when I had my family, I pretty much took my parents out of my life. They judged everyone and everything..and, never had a nice thing to say about anyone.

I made peace with them...and, took care of them with my brother and sister when their health failed.

My children are glad that I did what I did. And, both of my parents realized how their unloving religion...hurt what they should have loved the most...their family.
hug you did the right thing and stepped-up showing them love when you did, regardless.

Geno2809: Yes .. yes I did ..
Dad was a small farmer, only 5'1" but was such a large figure in my life. Set us all on the right path before he had to leave us.
He died young and asked me to promise him on his death bed, to never let a woman on top ..
"Son" he said "Please don't f#ck up"
All the above is true btw although my interpretation of what he said at the end has often been questioned.

For me, what made my dad so good was that he was a constant in my life. His presence, his morals, his openmindedness. He wasn't locked on like many of that generation.
So even though I lost him in my early 20's, he had given me the tools to make it in life as a good person.
He also passed on his quirky sense of humour to me ..

I had the best dad..I wouldn't even know where to start..I wouldn't do justice the way I type on here

Too many memories to type about but memories of scuba diving with my dad..Fishing with my dad..

Every year we would pack the caravan up on Boxing day take off for holidays on the beach..every year was a different destination..Never missed any of my school events. I can still hear him cheering me on at athletics

My dad was very impressed he ended up getting me a coach & he signed me up with an elite athletics club

My dad took me to watch him play Rugby league on weekends when I was very little..He was a very hard working man..He was all for us kids..A gentleman a gentle soul..Softly spoken..never raised his voice nor smacked us..He was tall..He would always squat down to talk to us.Friday nights we would sit and watch dads favourite country western songs..I say dads favourite but looking back us kids would belt out the tunes as well as dad..We called it coke and chips night..Singalongs with a packet of chips and a bottle of coke After dinner of course laugh

When mum walked out for a man 10 years her junior he was a different man..He never recovered from
the loss of my mum

All those things I mentioned doing with my dad..My mum & dad were married but she never did any of what we did with our dad..My nan told me that my mum was made to marry because she fell pregnant
with me

Mind you she had three more kids after me..My nan also said my mum was very jealous of all the time my dad spent and did things with us..neither here nor there my dad was a bloody good man husband and dad

bodleing2: My Dad was always there for me, he was kind and loving. He died when I was sixteen which really affected me. He was much older than me, born in 1899 and I think he was determined not to subject me to the same strict Victorian upbringing he'd had, he even changed his name by deed poll in his twenties to bring him into the 20th century.

I heard this song a couple of years after he died, I cried all the way through.

R.I.P. George (Gaylord) D. You were a good Dad.
My earliest memory of my dad was being removed from a bus at gunpoint in Yugoslavia. I guess he does look a bit like a Serbian terrorist.

And that was indicative of the way life was going to be. He always makes a scene.

Yes and no. He helped me with a lot of things, but he didn't really gave me affection. Nor did he or my mother knew what was best for me.
