A very Happy New Year to everyone. Perhaps some of you might be able to give good insight into something: I keep reading that there are going to (soon) be alarming shortages of both grocery and household products. I’ve “googled” several choices regarding this, but they’re rather lame. Now, I keep a very healthy pantry of non-perishables, canned goods, etc…and a storage area with virtually everything one could think of for cleaning, yard work, paper items, bath, kitchen… So, I live in southwest Oregon, which is relatively self-sustaining..ranches, fair weather, clean water, etc…comments from all about projected shortages would be appreciated. Thanks..wine

We seem to be adapting rather quickly from our Bexit manufacturing and transport shortages.

The most hardship I've experienced so far is having difficulty finding a soap that doesn't aggravate my skin.

Prices have gone up, mind, especially utilities. A lot of people with experience hardship from that.

Thanks for writing Jac. I’m sure regional capabilities factor in. One example is that here, on the southern beach, we’re an hour and a half to three hours from the ‘corridor’, or “main” highway. So, trucks must come fully loaded. Air freight is not cost-effective, nor are our small air and helio-ports efficient enough for the huge amount of products. Rail is all but gone, and trucking would have to relay, anyway. So, gas (petrol) is expensive, comparatively, oranges, toilet paper and towels, hardware, etc…elective items, such as cologne, high row clothing, (I wear ten dollar Bi-Mart dungarees!) watches, tv’s, etc…are often substantially higher. Our good stores, Macy’s, Penny’s, Albertsons, have all pulled up stakes and left. I’m fitting in a shopping trip in February when I’m in Eugene for medical appointments. They have “Jerry’s” Costco, Trader Joe, better stores with more merchandise.handshake

Yeah, my daughter lives in the central village around here, about half an hour away from me, so I can shop around a bit when I visit.

There are things I can no longer get hold of, or afford, but there's still plenty.

A very Happy New Year to you Ro hug hug

Where I live in the mountains in the province of Málaga I'm not noticing any shortages. But then I live a rather simple life and use mostly local produce and mostly natural toiletries made by local artisans apart from coconut oil which isn't locally produced and I use for everything.
I'm still putting together a small emergency pantry of foods, non perishable jars etc and things like flour which I keep in airtight containers.

The hike in electricity prices however is affecting many people. The bills have gone up by more than 300% wow Here again it's affecting me minimally as apart from my fridge, laptop and lighting which are on everyday, the rest I can choose to use during ''cheaper hourly rates''. Gas has gone up too but still affordable for now for cooking and hot water. So glad my cooker and water heater run on gas though. Because someone whose household is all electric needs a higher output contract which has gone up from about 25€ to about 87€ BEFORE consuming any electricity. I imagine their 150/200 usual bill is now around 450/600 euros a month wow sigh

That is an astronomical hike in electricity !!

Here I have not felt any price rise regards utilities yet, surely to come. I have a wood burning stove in the living room and in my work space. Gas and electric for cooking. Electric heating in the bedrooms but there is no need for me waste heating them.

Being resourceful helps whilst.

This is where the shortages come from here in the United State so it will give you a good idea of where they will be at. We have a shortage of people returning to the work force. So anything that is subject to this will start to dry up and not be available. Furniture, appliances just about everything including clothing. Right now we are buying what these places have stored for years that did not sale. dunno Soon it will run out. Same with our food sources. It will become more expensive as it becomes less available. I went out and bought bacon at the store yesterday. I paid almost ten dollars for a pound. Farmers and ranchers before covid were being choked to death by regulations and then with the onset of covid in 2020 and the restrictions that followed, many lost crops (no one to harvest them) In my area they were opening up and let people harvest for themselves for reduced prices just to get the stuff out where they could replant. Also many took to homeless and low income or hurting people (so many hurting) what they could not sale even at reduced prices. I myself am not going to worry about it. I as many on this site was raised in a time where I did not have all the choices we have had in the days before covid. I am quite honestly worried in the raising of prices of grocerys electric and etc. I will be ok. Just not as spoiled as I have become very happy I am a homeowner and now I am also wondering how I am going to get past the fact that in south Florida our homes have tripled in value because so many are moving here and there is no where to put them. What this means to me is when my homeowners insurace becomes due I will have to make a decision can I afford the new price, is it worth it to me, or am going to go uninsured in an area known for some beast of hurricanes. I do keep hurricane supplies. So I have can goods. Not really big into eating can foods. My Dad always thought when I was growing up China was going to invade the United States so we learned how to live off the land if need be and how to live on little. We were taught how to leave our comfortable enviroment if need be and go into the thick swamps where many are not use to the harsh reality of that area. Do I worry. Yes to some point. Yet I have made up my mind that I will not be ruled my last days here on earth by worry. I have faith and move forward. Remaining grateful for what I do have is my path. Sorry so long Ro. Who knows maybe someone needs to hear this if they can read this long of a post laugh

It's not been too bad around here. The worst I see is the surplus of unaffordable houses, the shortages are being made worse because developers build overpriced houses that won't sell even with the banks given a license to lend lots of money to fools in the attempt to repeat 2008.

That'll be the lasting difference as I see it. The pandemic has smashed local resistance meaning that developers can do anything they want. Not the empty shelves but the hostile takeover is what we'll remember. They've ravaged up our finances and smashed people power.

Hang on, I thought the developers were building houses that won't sell... I'm guessing economics isn't your strong suit.

Happygolucky4u: That actually sounds good. By then my humungous mango tree will have mangos and my pineapple bushes should be showing a few pineapples. Also I have two avacado trees I am putting in the ground closer to spring. We will feast
My offerings suddenly appear embarrassingly meagre, so I'd best offer to collect the fire wood and wash the dishes.

A joint effort on the cooking front is non-negotiable, however, with Sel as the third witch. laugh
