Sometimes it becomes difficult for us to differentiate between ego and self-respect. Often we see self-respect in ourselves and ego in others. It is very difficult to see your own ego.
Mercedes_00: I'm not bothered wasting my time trying to figure out other people simply because my backyard is the only place of interest that interest's me.
I ooze confidence with a few things & if that is seen as me having an ego well I simply don't care
I know what I do for others as they do me & that's that
One who is happy in himself becomes free from unnecessary hassles of others.
Decent_Love: Ego is just a small three letter word, which can destroy a big twelve letter word called Relationship. Ego is the biggest enemy of love.
Often our own ego seems like self-respect and the self-respect of others seems like ego.
Interesting subject Decent-love. Trying to understand oneself and how you see the world/others is always a worthwhile endeavour....
I always thought it was pride and fear that were enemies of love, but now that you mention it, I guess both boil down to ego...
When I was about 16 or 17 someone said to me "if it weren't for ego, none of us would so much as wash ourselves, our ego isn't about how we see ourselves, it's how we want others to see us"...

I always thought ego equalled fear. Most I have seen with what I percieved with big egos were always afraid of losing something if you looked closely at them you could see the fear. Afraid of losing something, afraid of not getting their way. To me there is a big difference between self respect and ego. I seem to have both. It depends on which is in charge for the day on how I behave. Sometimes self respect has to go around and clean up egos messes left behind when it in charge Interesting topic.

Laughing here at your "which is in charge" and "clean up egos messes"...I know what you mean, been there a few times myself
"Fear of losing and greed to gain" This is the basic instinct of human, it never ends. Fear and greed are found in all living beings which end only after death.
You may not have ego, but definitely you have fear and greed. Even in the worship of God, there is hidden fear and greed.
It may be self-respect to consider yourself better than others but expecting respect for yourself from others according to that consideration is definitely ego.
