A London hospital could lose 1,000 staff members if they do not get vaccinated, its chief executive has acknowledged after a doctor challenged the Health Secretary about rules on mandatory jabs for NHS workers.

Head of King’s College Hospital (KCH) Dr Clive Kay accepted he was “worried” as around 10% of approximately 14,000 workers at the hospital are yet to receive a first dose.

Dr Kay said his job was to “encourage staff to get vaccinated” after Sajid Javid was questioned by Steve James, a consultant anaesthetist on the ICU ward, during a visit to the hospital.

The consultant had told the Health Secretary he disagreed with the Government’s decision to make vaccinations mandatory for NHS hospital workers, saying the science was not strong enough to support the move.

Dr Kay refused to comment on “individual cases” but said it was a “moot point” whether or not the measures were fair, as they were now matters of law.

I think my job is to worry, my job is to worry about everything in relation to whether or not we have enough staff here to provide care for patients and will continue to do so

Dr Clive Kay, King's College Hospital

Senior staff at KCH are now ramping up efforts to encourage hospital workers to get jabbed as the deadline for them to receive a first dose approaches, he said.

In December, MPs approved mandatory vaccinations for NHS and social care staff by April this year.

Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday Morning show, Dr Kay said: “The law is now such that individuals who are not vaccinated, if they can’t be redeployed, will not be able to work in hospitals if they deal with patients.

“We’re having conversations with staff, their line managers are having conversations, we have a helpline where colleagues seek clarification and help.”

More than 1,000 members of staff could be lost in an “extreme” scenario unless vaccine uptake within the workforce improves, Dr Kay said.

Asked whether he was worried, Dr Kay said: “Yes, of course. I think my job is to worry, my job is to worry about everything in relation to whether or not we have enough staff here to provide care for patients and will continue to do so, and we will provide care for patients but ultimately if individuals choose not to (it’s) their choice,” he said.
They should accept the jabs in the public interest

I have a question Tom: does being jabbed help reduce the spread?
And if so, to what degree are the jabbed less spreading.
What is the latest data on that. I'd like a comparison in % please
so we can make an informed decision.

I've had both my shots plus my booster but I won't be having anymore shots/boosters. I've had members of my family contract the virus that haven't been vaccinated and they've been slightly ill and others that have been vaccinated that have been a lot worse. My next door neighbour who has had all 3 shots, contracted the virus last week, ok, she's in her late 60's but she is really ill. I am now of an opinion that we don't really know enough about these vaccines. I agree that we have done well to produce a vaccine after just 12/14 months and people "like me" were eager to get it as we thought it would stop us contracting it. Now it's a case of 1, then 2, then a booster, then another booster, how long will this go on for? pumping chemicals into us but yet we can still contract the virus
In the 80's, I worked in a hospital that had a TB Ward. I was told that if I didn't have my TB vaccination that I would lose my job. Way back then, you complied as you had no choice. Many people don't have a choice if they're allergic to certain things, as with the Covid Vax
I have my flu shot every year as I'm really ill with flu if I contract it if I don't but the flu shot has been going for donkey's years.
What about the Aids Virus way back in the 70's and 80's when we knew nothing about it but yet all those Dr's and Nurses were still treating those patients, not knowing if they could contract it through touching those patients but yet those Angels in my eyes still went to work to take care of those patients. It's about having a choice and not living in fear teddybear

Not nerve mikey. I, like many others are now realising what's actually going on. People believing their Governments and no, I'm not talking about politics, just regarding the vaccination. 1st one shot, then another and then a booster. I did this because I thought that I would be protected, just like millions of other people did, because we were frightened of the virus. Yes! I do believe it exists and yes I do believe that it has killed 1000's of people, I'm not doubting that. What I do doubt is our Government keep saying that we need to keep getting vaccinated against a virus that we really know nothing about plus, I've seen it 1st hand with my family and friends, some vaccinated and others that chose not to. That's what's made up my mind and my opinion on things now.

I don't know how to post a pic on here but my son sent me this today. It says

There will be a time in the not too distant future, when the immunity from the vaccines will fade & blo jo has already stated that no more boosters will be given .
So in essence, those who had the vaccines will
be no better off than the non vaccinated.

The vaccines were an easy way to lose your covid virginity. But it doesn't make much difference, one practice girl or four? And the truth is a great many of us don't need a practice girl, not even the first time.

That my point .
The governments have run out of excuses & ideas & cannot keep using the unvaccinated as scapegoats.

And this will hopefully become more accurate as time goes on. Personalized medicine will be able to tell me exactly why I need a vaccine and you don't, and vice-versa.

Well it's very silly now that omicron has arrived. The unvaccinated are not that worse off because the vaccines are not that good and the omicron is not that bad.
