I've noticed many people on CS have a reasonable education, some to degree level.

Has this helped you,?

What does the university tell you the others don't know?

Please tell if you have been helped by a degree, or not.

Are you one o the egg heads or one of the dickheads

No naming names. All welcome.

tomcatty: You were a gas fitter if I remember, you did well, the worst thing we did in this country was reduce apprenticeships, which seem to be coming back.

The English caste system should put more credence on apprenticeships .
I agree! The apprenticeship system should be revamped and valued!

Even the MOD has an apprenticeship system to train some of their engineers!! Mind you the candidates have to pass a few exams and interviews to qualify for the apprenticeship but it's the best training with the "latest of every technology available to the country", way above the kind of learning you'd get from a Uni course. And because they're based at the Naval base they get to do fitness training as well ...

Yes, Artificer apprentices are a good start in the Royal Navy, and have a high entry requirement, Many future Engineering Officers come from this elite apprenticeship.

You don't have to be in the Royal Navy, every year they take on about 20 civil apprentices on the base ...
They have to sign a secret's act even before going through all the interviews

Apprenticeships

When you start an apprenticeship in the Royal Navy, you’re right at the beginning of an adventure that will take you all around the world. You’ll be a valuable member of our team as soon as you join, because you’ll be learning on the job, making a vital contribution and earning a competitive wage from day one. And our world-class training will mean you have all the transferable skills you need to succeed in civilian life.

Royal Navy apprenticeships were judged by Ofsted to be ‘Outstanding’. The Royal Navy is rated as a ‘Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer’ and, with one of the highest completion rates in the UK, is a recognised provider of quality apprenticeships.

thumbs up

The one I'm talking about involves my son (without enlisting) just after his A levels, joining for an apprenticeship as a Telecommunications Engineer. 3 year program with a monthly salary with full board and lodgings on base. We had to buy him a suit for all the interviews after he passed all the exams! A very proud moment!

Well done the young lads!!!
Mine's now the Dad of a 5 year old and about to have another one with a young woman he met while they were both working for the MOD. heart beating

When I graduated from high school in the mid-1970’s, if one cleaned up nice, wrote cognitively, had good manners, etc…a very good job was not difficult to find.
(And I found one right away). Things changed rapidly. In order to follow my interest to a professional level, I needed to attend and graduate with an associates degree, plus license. I did it, then slowly earned the next level (bachelors). So, to answer your question, probably can find good enough work without a degree, but it’s necessary for almost all upper skill-set jobs. Hope this helps…

In the U.S. in order to enter the medical, legal and law enforcement fields you do need a certain level of formal education depending on how far you want to go in that arena. Obviously a brain surgeon or heart surgeon needs more education then a doctor who treats people who have a cold.

I succeeded in what I wanted to do without a formal education, however, I did attempt an Associates Degree. I had to stop because my daughter was at the young age where I thought it was more important to give my attention to her. She went on to venture in law enforcement and did very well in that arena.

As far as needing a formal education to be a CEO of a company I know people who never went to college and yet are at the top of their game.

I think a Doctor can treat more than a common cold, but I too know entrepreneurs who have built their own successful businesses these people have a special talent, but I think you will find they have schooled themselves, in business practices, it takes a great deal of delf discipline to run a successful business
