There isn’t a word for people who don’t believe that unicorns exist, or for those who don’t believe that goblins exist. I mean if for everything it were possible to deny the existence of, there were a word to describe those who didn’t believe in it, can you imagine how thick a dictionary would have to be? It might once have been useful to have a word for those who didn’t believe in God when nobody was allowed to not believe in him, but we can believe or not believe whatever we like now, at least in the enlightened parts of the World, so do we any longer have a use for the word?

When was anyone not allowed to believe in any god or God? God bless you.
Perhaps agnostic is a better word, I think the word atheist carries an undercurrent of communism and suggests someone with strong anti Christian views....it's a dark word.

I believe there have been times in British history when a person could be punished for not attending church, and there have certainly been times when to profess a disbelief in God would have brought social ostracization upon you if not official sanctions of some sort.

I don't object to agnostic as an adjective, but why is there any need for a noun?

It's pretty much just Britain that trusts atheists like they were usual. Oldest modern country in the world. In other lands atheism is associated with trying to make the future happen more quickly. A lot of the world needs a word for something even worse than a Jew.

Well I would settle for the word "atheist" to just be abolished in Britain then, for now, at any rate.
