phatdrummer650: you're right.
The word Atheist is redundant anyways.
There is already a word for that - Foolish.
It would have been interesting to have heard your reason for that opinion.

well there is 'theist' and 'atheist', believer and non-believer - rather silly question. I am an inconvertible atheist. Gods are such a risible concept.

Circlip: There isn’t a word for people who don’t believe that unicorns exist, or for those who don’t believe that goblins exist. I mean if for everything it were possible to deny the existence of, there were a word to describe those who didn’t believe in it, can you imagine how thick a dictionary would have to be? It might once have been useful to have a word for those who didn’t believe in God when nobody was allowed to not believe in him, but we can believe or not believe whatever we like now, at least in the enlightened parts of the World, so do we any longer have a use for the word?
I believe the "need" for the word comes from the desire to make the denial even more strong and obvious...
It's like the word "empath", one wants to be attached to something that sounds like an exclusion...from the masses of ordinary people...

Well I can't argue with razor sharp logic of that calibre, Fargo. smile

FargoFan: rather silly question.

That is really what I'm getting at; the word does imply an opposition to theistic belief. But some people don't even consider the question of God's existence worthy of denying. It is not an act of denial, or opposition, it is merely an absence of taking it into consideration. It is for that reason that I don't like the word.

Maybe the guy who wrote the scripture is the fool, and maybe those who read it are even bigger fools.

Just a theory. dunno

That's the point isn't it. I never hear the word atheist in Britain and think political statement.

You know, Harb,
I believe that there's is something greater than the human and I don't need proof of it or see it...
I don't worship anything, I only have a sacred reverence towards the whole creation, that's all...

That sounds reasonable. I don't know what there is beyond my own observation and perception, and I'm not sure that it matters what there is. I don't need to know, and that's the point. I don't actually mind being called an atheist, but it is absolutely useless as some kind of label for what I might or might not believe. The creation of this thread might imply that it matters to me, but doesn't really.

But an atheist is someone who has made a conscious judgement that no such thing as God exists. How can you be anti something that doesn't exist? dunno

They have as much right to claim that God exists as you have to claim he doesn't.
