Not sure how safe it is, but been using it for the past 10 years or so with minimal issues (e.g. voice call/video quality). I believe that it was recently bought over by FB (which would be Mark Zuckerberg).

Grand, WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype etc etc..
Not one is safer than the other!!!

You need to give your details, either phone or email....and don't forget, nothing is secret!

We just need to discern, who's a scammer and who isn't! dunno

Myself, I like to hear the person's voice instead of sending dozens of emails.

It’s just as safe as giving out your phone no.
How else will you contact someone from another country for free ?

nahhh....u see skype stands out as safer to me then.. cos
like on cs, you don't give out your real name. Or number.

I also prefer to go to voice relatively soon especially If I'm in doubt if I like the person or trust.
A slight different when I know somebody well by cs mail or through forum/blogs
cos then I can often decide if a person is of interest to me without skype.

You can block anyone who you think is suspicious.

Whatsapp uses end-to-end encryption which makes it more secure than most messaging services. That is of course if you dont mind sharing your phone number and are not put off by the fact that it is owned by facebook.
There have been breaches of security on whatsapp, but not so many considering it has around a billion users worldwide.

Through S K Y P E baby... hehe
And here in norway, if you have the number of a person (who has not actively asked it to be hidden)
at the open digital phonebook the address is there too. Basically after getting my whatsapp number she (or he) can seek me up in person, or arrange to try and steal my ID. If they are clever.
At least they know my full name and address + number. And that I don't wanna give to anybody.
Photo they have too, to go with it.

Once the scammer has my number and address it's a tad late to block...

They don’t have any access to your address , nor do they have any access to your financial records .
So I fail to see how you could be scammed , unless you are gullible, or stupid enough to give out your personal details!

I’m sure you wouldn’t , but that doesn’t mean that what’s app isn’t safe if used responsibly.
