I've read some comments in the BLOGS recently where certain bloggers have used the term "undateable", which is kinda/sorta new to me. I know that when I've heard in in the past, it was used as an insult, but could anyone really be "undateable"?
I've read about and seen very old people dating, I've read and seen people with mental and physical challenges dating, I've even read of imprisoned persons 'dating' (via phone calls and letters). So, what could make somebody undateable?
P.S. I'd hate to think that I might be......undateable.

If they are talking about themselves then YES, they are undateable. They know they must work on something within themselves before they can offer themselves to another.
These people are smart and considerate. They do not jump from failed relationship to another blaming the mate when the problems are them.

So, what could make somebody undateable? Well, some are that of their own choosing. Basically there is no way to get anywhere with them cos they has shut the door for suiters of one reason or another. That is what first springs to my mind upon hearing that expression.
P.S. I'd hate to think that I might be......undateable.
Somebody can be that of their own choosing by shutting the door tight for potensial suitors.
Not want any of such in their life. Nomather how hard you try you wan't get a fair chance. That is the first thought that comes to my mind when hearing that word.
Are you undateable Didi? Have you closed the door? I hope nooot..

Friendship, thanks for enlightening me. I hadn't though of it being a personal choice. Makes sense though.

I really thought that the term was used to declare that another person (not oneself) was 'undateable' due to certain flaws or personal circumstances that he/she had. Thus, my assumption that is was used as an insult.

Well G, someone who just doesn't want to date isn't really undateable. It just means that they're NOT interested in dating. Being "undateable" seems to imply that he/she has some defect that's preventing the person from being eligible to date.
Here's what I got from a dictionary (via Google, of course)
undateable Describes an individual so flawed that they cannot possibly be dated by anyone. E.g. Mandy: Phil is so completely undateable. I have no idea why my cousin set us up. Tamara: What happened?!? Mandy: For starters, he is 35 and lives with his parents, and he smelled like rotten vegetation. And there were nose hairs. Tamara: Agreed. Undateable.
Undateable to the rest of us atleast. Was it said with humor or with spite you recon? I hope for the first. And I suppose I will continue to believe in the human race, at least for a bit longer.

Whichever way you look at it, the word has negative and belittling connotations because of it's associations with perceived flaws.
I wouldn't call myself 'undateable' even though I'm in no position to date.
Didi7: Really? So dating is about "standards"...ONLY? Hmph!...smh
I didn’t say ONLY . I certainly wouldn’t date a druggie , or an alcoholic, or any one with serious mental health issues. If that makes me sound picky, then so be it .
