God spelled backward is dog and I love them both.
Owners need to do better.

I believe that if the dog's owner(s) are going to be away for long periods of time, work, travel, etc...then whether it is a house or an apartment is not the issue. Dogs need their owners pretty much constantly--they don't do very well overall when their "person" is absent. Their are numerous videos and documentaries that show habitats trashed to smithereens because of a bored dog. So, I'm not really against having a dog in an apartment--as long as someone is there the majority of the time.

Well, they might want to look into buying their own homes, instead of renting.....

The apartments I live in have no yard but a park across the street.
When the dogs finally get to the elevator or outside the door, they pee, even on
the balcony.
When my daughter travels, I move in and care for the dog.
The dog has a yard and doors to come and go.dancing dog

bodleing2: In the uk most housing associations and councils will not allow dogs in common entrance apartments, which I can understand.
Not sure what the difference leaving a dog alone in an apartment or a house is though. I dont think people should have a dog if they're out working most days anyway, The RSPCA recommends not to leave a dog alone for mor than four hours..
Yes I should have considered my question more carefully before posting conversing

It was triggered by a situation that had just popped up and I mused on the whole apartment-living aspect in general which then morphed into dogs being shut indoors on their own for lengthy periods conversing

Which I agree isn't right, regardless of the building type.

There's been some well thought out responses here, thank you wave

I say No. I don't even like cats in apartments.

serene56: Hi Gal

I agree that dog owners need to take responsibility regarding their pets and be respectful of their neighbours

Also in the community in general.

I'm just wondering about people's views in terms of having a dog enclosed in an apartment for hours on end while they are at work or out socialising
What difference does it make if the dog is alone in a house by itself all day or an apartment? The pet is still left alone all day and it can cause anxiety issues with the dog.

All depends on the breed of the dog. A low energy dog thats not active would be ok but something like a Husky, it would be cruel. A Newfoundland dog would be a ideal apartment dog because they are low energy and mostly laid back. A Husky would go out of its mind and probably tear up the place while at it.

I heard that before. Odd, hey. You would think a Greyhound would be the last candidate for a apartment dog.

In quite some appartment buildings, dogs are strictly forbidden (common rules) , because of the uncontrollable noise they provoke. You can turn of a radio or TV, but you can not turn off a dog...
Hence, the rules that exclude dogs.

You would, but they are very placid and quite lazy couch potatoes. That is until you take them out for their daily walk and unleash them, the they go insane....laugh

There is nothing wrong with dogs living in apartments.
If they get their daily walks and care.
I'd rather see a dog free in an apartment then chained in a garden...

Along as they are very well trained and are taken out often for walks then I would completely be OK with a dog living in an apartment...but like humans we need the outdoors too often so they would need to think of that for the dog.

We lived in a "Railroad Flat" on the upper East side of Manhattan in NYC. One day when I was about 13 my mother said she was getting a dog. Naturally I thought it would be a German Shepard or a Doberman. I was devastated when I saw the dog she brought home. It was a little Boston Terrier. How was I ever going to face my friends with a dog that was about the size of a cat? Well, it didn't take long to fall in love with this little guy who turned out to be the smartest dog I ever saw not only that, he was also able to understand commands in English, German and French.
On day a couple came by with a camera and took a picture of me & Jackie. I showed them how Jackie would sit up on command and they caught it on film. I can't seem to post a pic on here for some reason even after about 5 try's. dunno

They all should be sent back to the wild to be free & not to be confussed what they are animals not human fur babies, or there should be some IQ test on those that wish to own a pet dog,

They wouldn't last days in the wild.
A healthy Cat can live for up to over 20years...indoors.
An outdoor cats life is halved!!
