Using a pen is quite intelligent, Decent. You have to be literate to read and artful to write something worth reading, powerful words don't come from just anyone. The power of the gun is open to everybody, you don't need skill to fire a bullet or be hit by one.
I like to think of the gun as primitive but unnatural at the same time. Violence is the answer but not the answer for those who would naturally win at violence, it is something apart from beating a man until both you and the man are crying. It's rifle beats spear, it's the smaller you are the better, it's the reason for women in the army. Guns are the victory of small men.
The gun is how a school shooter turns the tables on his normal oppressors. It is to empower two types of people - the least physical and the most vicious. The smaller you are the easier it is to dodge a bullet, and nothing matters so much as being the aggressor. The element of surprise matters far more when you could kill instantly, no other fight gives the advantage so much to whoever attacks first.
