I think (this is just my opinion) that some posters tend to reply to a particular post in a thread and disregard the original topic.

That is why a thread starts with whale smuggling in the 18th century as a topic and ends up discussing nasal hair.

It really cannot be helped unless the rule of discussing only the topic in the original post is upheld (but then it could get a trifle boring - nasal hair is such an enthralling subject)
