It means either the person who wrote them out hasn't got the funds or they had the checks canceled.
I'm not a banker, but, I've had that happen a couple of times. Do you owe money on them? Or you didn't get them cashed?

I was a banker for 21 years. The check was not returned for insufficient funds. There is a different reason. "Refer to Maker" means just that. Please contact the maker (your employer as you said they are payroll checks) and they will tell you what is wrong with them. Chances are they may just issue you new checks. It could be some little simple problem as someone stole some checks and they aren't sure which ones or a variety of other reasons. No way to speculate - just do as it says, refer to maker and they will let you know. Please let me know what happens.

actually, i finally did get a hold of someone...checks were stolen. Thanks for your input. I will get replacement checks monday.
I think that they should have contacted each employee instead of letting the checks come back to us in the mail as if they were returned for insufficient funds. I make decent money and this is a second part for me, but there are lower paid (minimum wage) employees that work there that live paycheck to paycheck. This was so wrong...No wonder there are no work ethics anymore.

Babe, I do direct deposit. During Katrina the banks and direct deposit was shut down, I could use the debit card to buy things, but could not deposit in the account. We got the pay check a week later. I had to drive over a 100 miles to find a bank to cash it, and then I opened an account with them for direct. So now I have two bank accounts and two saving account, I just keep one for the household expenses. This way I am covered locally and away from home.

You want BANKERS! I got plenty of bankers ... and they have a lot in common. They are all living in a destitute African country sitting on millions of dallars (in US Dollars) wanting to get it out of the country. They are a generous mob. They want to give me 50% if I will only give them my bank account details.
