Am trying to do it through windows movie maker,but............its slower than an 8 day clock 
I went to town at 1:15 expecting it to be done by the time i got back 2 hours later,but no!,not even half friggin way

Though about using an AVI splitter,to split the files in half,
Followed by using Nero, which automatically converts from AVI to VCD, which'll enable you to burn it to CD-R, as a VCD, which'll play on the majority of DVD players?
When I download films, I usually tend to download them in two halfs, as most have been split.

r, if you'd like the file even smaller, compress it, then split it. Compressing the file, will cause a little loss in quality, but so will converting.
Or, to save yourself the hassle of converting, download the film in an MPEG format, which'll enable you to burn it straight to CD-R, as VCD, I personally find the MPEG quality alot better than AVI
I tried to download the file as wmv or something like,save converting it but couldn't find a source in that file type.
I'm now waiting (very patiently!) for windows movie maker to save this file i've fiddled with,i've been able to check it and it now plays in media player so should be fine for copy to a dvd rw disc

Take it you've downloaded from a torrent sight, takes ages, that's why I don't bother. DIVX (or DVD format) is better, but it takes so long!! Again, Nero OEM suite is a good piece of software to have, it caters right through from audio cd's, to dvd's, right through to label creators.

.WMV should play in Media Player, anyway, as it's a recognised file, doesn't it stand for Window's Media Visual??
Yeh i think thats what it stands for,my problem was the file wouldn't play in media player but in divx player and when i copied the file to dvd rw first time how it was there was nothing on my tv screen!

That's why I always burn as VCD, quality can be shat, but it's quick, easy, and a saving of 12 odd quid.
I remember seeing a program, on the net, it's something like WIN AVI or Windows AVI, (I could be wrong?) But it's supposed to do the converting on average, in around 15 minutes, it boasts being the fastest program, but comes with a hefty price tag...
Tried finding the crack for it once, but the only outcome I got, was a host of viruses, (the typical problem with crack sites)
Have you not thought about saving yourself the hassle, by geting Clone DVD & Any DVD, that's a great program to use, rent the DVD from Blockbusters, then rip away?

That problem sounds like it was / is missing a codec, if it doesn't play... Trial & error's the best way though,
