Or German for that matter? confused

French ranks 14th on the world language table in terms of native speakers; Climbing to a massive 9th when you add the 52 million who speak French as a second tongue. Only 58% of French speakers are native. German dose little better going from 9th to 10th with only 19% not being native. Spanish on the other hand takes 3rd place for native speakers and 4th over all.

Mandarin of cause taking the top slot with 885 million native speakers.

It's always nice to know how to speak a different language, especially if you travel/live there. I studied Azeri before I went to Azerbaijan. It made living there for 2 years much easier and the Azeribaijanis appreciated the fact that I at least tried. (Lot's of funny language stories/screw ups)

Anyway, Azeri is just about worthless outside of Azerbaijan or Turkey but hey, I learned a different language and I still chat with friends from there from time to time.

If you look at the statistics, French and German are the most understood and spoken languages in the European Union after English. It only makes sense that they learn German and French. It certainly makes one more employable within the European Union.

The original question of why do English children learn French is totally different to the second one one "or German for that matter?"

Throughout history, the English and the French were never on very good terms.
Although things changed drastically in recent years, probably because of the European Union, very few French people ever bothered to talk in anything but their native language, and so with the English, only that English is talked in so many countries.
So the only way English children would have a chance comunicating with the French was by studying French.

German, or any other language for that matter was a matter of choice. Whatever turned you on sort of.

The way i see it through experience conversations with english ppl is that they're not bothered to learn another language as English language is a global communication. But there again the more you learn you'll find it useful in life. Example; we all come from different parts of the globe & yet we chat in english. So why not French?? Its a beautiful, romantic language. Merci pour votre attention!!professor

I am an English native living in Portugal. I understand that the Portuguese teach there children English in primary school.conversing

As for the question, it was never ‘why do English children learn a foreign language’. The question was why those two. I have since been enlightened; French is the second most popular language in Europe.
