My favorite sport is fishing. I fancy myself one of the best fishers I've ever known, but I'm always interested in new tricks and tips.

What I am most interested in, of course, is where to find the fish. Where is your favorite hole, and what do you catch there?

I love Arbuckle Lake. It's clean, cold, deep, and full of smallmouth bass, perch, and catfish. We even caught a gar in there two weeks ago; that was a first for me! Got him after dark, on a worm....

Ah, the children and I catch stick-fish all the time. They're okay, we just throw them back. The ones that bug me are those blasted bottom-fish. They run of with the weight, hook and bait!

Hey guys, I think the best fishing is in Ontario, Canada. There are some lakes that I've fished that you can get into a 30-40lb Muskie while reeling in a pan fish. My favorite lake holds a good population of Large and Smallmouth Bass, Pike, and Pickeral (walley for you southern folk) as well as all the pan fish you'ld ever want. In the fall we have some of the best Salmon fishing you'll find. There's a river just up the road from me where I caught a 25lb Coho, 28lb Chinook, and a 17lb Rainbow Trout. All in a little over an hour.

My favorite bait for Bass is a 6" Texas rigged black or grape worm, or go top water with Scum frogs or rats.
Double Willow leaf for Pike (white body with 3" hot pink grub trailer), and spinners for everything else.

I tell you, there's nothing like sitting in a canoe in the middle of a quiet back bay full of lilypads and bucket mouth bass. (preffer the canoe 'cause I can get in where the boats can't)

Oh yeah, almost forgot. The strangest thing I've ever hooked? Believe it or not, I actually set the hook into a beaver. Fought like hell until I got it about 5' from shore then I cut the line when I remembered that they have jainsaws hanging out of there mouths, and they chew though trees for a living. Only in Canada eh?

So what's the strangest thing you've ever hooked?

Oh, well, I suppose, I'm not a fisherman, not at all,
but let me put in my two cent's worth. A friend of
mine and I decided that on Queen Victoria Day, the
24th of May, every year, we would go fishing. And so
starting in grade 6 we took our fishing poles out, and
fished, one day a year. From where we lived in North
Vancouver there were rivers, lakes, and inlets of the
Pacific Ocean that we could easily walk to. All of
them had some kind of fish, and we caught something
every year, not a lot, but something, and ate it, all
through school. Fishing was such a big part of local
culture it seemed mandatory, and one day a year seemed
our token acquiescence to this cultural norm.

BC is still one of the most extraordinary places to
fish, with mountain streams, lakes, and the ocean.
In the Fraser River are 20 foot long sturgeon. The
salmon in the Pacific are still as always the stuff
of legend.

A note to hot -- while it is landlocked, Idaho has fine mountains streams and lakes full of fish too.

I may have heard of worm-blowing when I was younger, but it is a trick I've never seen accomplished. Surely you don't stick it in your mouth and blow. How do you do it? I can see the advantages it might have - all fish love worms! And floaters can be convenient in many places. Tell me the trick?

I'm not a bit squeamish, I've even eaten a worm. (Science camp - not gonna be one o' the wimps.) But if worms and fish make you a bit frothy, just go with me and I'll handle them for ya! Two poles are better than one...

Actually strawberry it's an easy rig to "bottom bounce" a worm. The only two tricks are to remember to use small hooks, and figuring out how high off bottom to float your worm. Okay, the rig. Tie a small hook (I use row hooks)on the end of your line. Next cut the line at what ever height you want the worm off the bottom. Thread the end of the line from the reel through a large slip weight, then tie the two lines together with a swivle. So After your done riggin the swivle stops the weight from going to the end of the line, and the line moves freely through the wieght so a fish doesn't feel the weight when it takes the worm.
Now the secret. (shhh) To blow a worm you can get a blower in most tackle stores, or ask a doctor for a needle. (some will give you one once you explain why) Hook the worm about the middle of the body, then insert the blower, or air filled needle, into the worm on one side of the hook at an angle away from the hook. Then gently inflate the worm until you have enough air to keep the hook from sinking. (being careful not to explode the worm) I only inflate one end of the worm so that it looks more natural.
One of the best things about "bottom bouncing" is that you can set your rod in a holder and do other things while waiting for the bites, and the fish normally set the hook themselves when they try to swim away.

One of the best places to fish is cold cove in southeast alaska. I was a guide for a year up there and we caught some huge fish, for instence. coho slamon or silvers 15lbs-27lb, king salmon 20lbs-76lbs, that was caught on my boat by a friend vistiing me, and then the real lunkers halibut 45lbs-373lbs that was caught on a trip I took out. My boat was set up for that kind of fishing, it doesn't work so well here in Colorado.
