Yes and No.
As soon as I grasp the initial understanding my mind try's to focus on it.
Of course you lose it completely. The reason you lose it is because you alter your thought process's and find the part of the brain you switch to doesn't understand and blocks it out with more immediate problems.

As to thread topic. I find I have these moments alot, which is why I write poetry. Often, just like Coleridge in his Kublai Khan, I will begin to write something and get distracted mid-poem. When I return to it, for the life of me, sometimes I can't figure out what the hell I meant.
