Log on to the eircom.net site and use their google to search for AVG.

Download their FREE editions of anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit.

Works well for mine.

i have spybot and i found it good at first but my computer seems to have slowed right down again.
i've tried downloading avg but again, as with alot of these programmes, they don't work well with windows vista. which, by the way i would not recommend to anybody.

Hey tessie, i use Vista and norton works well with it, takes a bit of getting used to, and almost nothing is compatible with it yet, but it's a gem to use when your used to it. If your just having a very slow computer have you tried getting a line check done by your isp? you may not be getting the speed you should havehug

Theres a problem with alot of the "so-called" antispyware products on the market.. If you dident have spyware before, you sure have after installing one of them..

I tend to agree with ppl who make PR for Spybot. S&D.
It is the bedst software for what you need

Heres what I do to speed up my system.

First run your spy ware programs and get rid of all that crap.
Then go into your system restore points and turn them off.
It will clean out all your old restore points, this has a tendency to bog your system down a little cause it searches all these for the one it wants.
When thats turned off, run a virus scan, a complete scan.
After your scan is done de frag your C:\ drive

once your defrag is done, restart your system restore point and set a new one, I am assuming that oyu know how to turn your system restore off and then turn it back on ?
Once you have your new restore point done reboot your PC and it should start up faster and run smoother.
Also you can go into settings and turn of Messenger, it will stop all the annoying pop ups you get while running explorer.
All you have to do is go into Administrative tools and find messenger, right click and dbl click properties and then open the little drop down window and choose disable or manuel, disable works the best.
hope this helps .

In addition to all the above, I would recommend using the following:

Windows Defender (anti-spyware). This is available from
AVG Free edition (anti-virus). This is available from
AVG Anti-Spyware Free edition (anti-spyware). This is available from
for free.
Please install only one of the 2nd and 3rd options, as these are real time scanners, and thus might cause conflicts if both are installed.

Regarding Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware, I haven't tried them in Vista, so I cannot say if they work or not. Please note that both of these are freeware, just google them to get the URLs to download them. You can install them both, as they are On Demand scanners, i.e. you have to run them yourself to scan the PC.

Prior to defragging your hard disk, run the cleanmgr.exe from the start menu, as this will clear a whole lot of temporary files. Please note that it will also clear your Recycle Bin, thus make sure that you do not need any files that you have recently deleted.
