Because there are so many words / Phrases that mean similar or the same thing.
You can converse in english and talk forever-- virtually without getting to the point and even totally evading it

wave I think I've wrapped my head round it now weddy!
I tried learning German once and was very determined but my totally brilliant teacher got really sick (not of me! rolling on the floor laughing ) and so I gave up... Being a languages teacher (a very good one) makes me very a very difficult language student as I find I am a little too critical if their tuition is not made interesting... dunno

I don't understand why you say that English is the most difficult language to learn.
I have been born and brought up with the English in Malta, and never found any problem making those subtle differences that are written in your sentences.

If you think that English is a hard language to learn, why don't you try Maltese? You would' nt get as far as the abc. We have a loit more letters than in the English language too.

It's normally quite easy to determine who is and isn't a native English speaker.......... I'll say no more so as not to insult people who think they speak fluent English (includes a lot of English people).........batting

My point exactely! Any language that you are born and brought up with is easy! Funny that I never found Spanish or French at all difficult!

It is true that the English tend to be pretty poor at learning other languages. I grew up in England and am actually living in a foreign country and have made little/no effort to learn any of the language.(Shameful I realise but I can excuse myself by saying that English is actually an official language here.) That sounds a little empirical I know but I didn't mean it that way.
On a different note the English can be quite bad at speaking English as dialects vary wildly. I grew up in Manchester and found it difficult to be understood properly when I went to far South!
In fact, I have heard much better English here than you ever would in Manchester!

tout au contraire ma chere Fleur ... hug

its easy .. having a few words having different meanings - one can get away of living with that shortage of expressions ...

But .....doh

if you take the German language ...
where you have a huge selection of words to say more or less the same thing ... depending the way you choose to express yourself ..

plus au moin bien ..

wink wine

A deviant art form perhaps; they all seem to have taken their versions of English from the novel 1984 by George Orwell...

do you include yourself in that context being from wales ; and how can you tell from the written word if someone is a native speaker; im not to good with the typing and i make mistakes like most here ; but i speak fluent perfect english in conversation as our dear smoky will confirm;,my excuse for my writing mistakes is that my laptop is in need of repair [not a case of blaming my tools its true it keeps missing letters ] but its not about wether your english is good or bad; it is wether you can communicate with others; if you can mistakes dont matter it is the enjoyment you get from being on cs and chatting to others in english good or bad professor cool devil

That was some funny senteces! Languages can make you both cry and laugh. By the way, I have learnt English, German, French and Spanish at school, I once asked my German teacher who was teaching German, French and English which is the most difficult languages - German or French (I had not started Spanish yet). Her answer was: "English" - the reason being the English language having less rules and pronounciation being inconsistent. Some examples are found above when it comes to differences in stressing:

'present and pre'sent
in'valid and 'invalid

The other day I had a conversation with an Irish collegue:
He said something like "We ususally go to the mill to buy flour"
I replied: "Why do go to the mill to buy flowers?" .....

Languages are really something you can play around with! javascript:emot('laugh');
