Just wondering how many people out there are in the lucky position of being able to go out and leave their door open....
It's a habit I got into living in France.Admittedly in deepest rural France. After all if a neighbour passes by with a bottle of home made "eau de vie" and you are not there you want them to be able to gain access to leave the bottle! Now I am living 800metres up a mountain in Southern Spain and the same applies. Most of my friends take pleasure in the fact that this is still possible. Also, with the climate here we all live outside for most of the year anyway so there are cookers, fridges, furniture etc. left out whilst the owners happily go away for days, sometimes weeks,on end.Are we being naive,or just content to live in a beautiful region.....in all respects.

I would think that you are lucky to live in such an environment. From what you said in your post, it seems that the crime rate is very low in your area.

Everywhere else, especially cities, it would be better to lock up everything as secure as possible.

Over here, there was the tradition of leaving the door keys in the lock on the outside of the door. Now you'd rarely see anybody doing it any more, except maybe in a rural area.

We used to leave our doors unlocked when I was younger back in UK. The neighbours had a key for when we'd go out and forget it. There was lots of trust and looking back I was fortunate to have lived in a place where we were able to that.

Oh how life changes.

We still do this .... here in this little swiss village. We lock the front door now, but only because the old old lady who used to visit the previous old lady who owned this house, and is now considered my "friend" too, pops in on her way past and we find her shuffling down the passage to the kitchen "Hallooooowing" to see if I`m home! ..... we find this a little bit of an invasion, especially if the whole family are at home....

But the back door remains unlocked during the day for the comings and goings of family members, in fact, in mild weather it stands wide open, and I often come home from a walk to find some gift item deposited on the kitchen table......from neighbors, or friends.

This is so comfortable and realy nice. I come from a country where just a locked door was not enough .... huge wrought iron security gates, panic buttons, cctv, and resident Rottweiler are the norm of daily life.
