What i'm asking is do you do the math when tipping a percentage thing? do tip to impress the company you keep. does the food you have effect your tip? I happened to see an incident, and thought the server was extremely mistreated. she was more of a "Mom" type. I felt bad that 3 three men could be so rude.

I usually tip well, it takes a lot of mistreatment by a server to make me not tip anything. In high school, I was a waitress, and I know what kind of crap they have to put up with, so I usually tip well. Sometimes well beyond the 15% that is usually expected here. At least then, you know that when you return you will be treated very well.
I know of what you speak..daughters friend has left the waitress business for other things but she can still call that restaurant and get a saturday or sunday shift.. If you are good at what you do you will always be in demand
good hot food, courteous and clean appearance of the staff, drinks filled without asking, suggestion and/or courteous cards given at the end of service.

Their attitude - I don't expect a Mouskateer but don't treat me like I interupted your day. Did they get my order right? Was it prompt? No need to loiter near my table and ask me lots of questions - leave me in peace to eat. Generous tipper - most food serivce workers are underpaid and overworked. Most are good at what they do.
In France, all wait-persons receive minimum wage (higher than in US) and 15% is automatically tacked on to any restaurant check. Still, if service is good, one tips. Some another 15%
I usually leave a certain amount no matter what. If the service was good, they tried to be kind and considerate, they gave me the food that I asked for and prepared properly, I usually leave a larger tip. If they didn't do any of that, I probably will just leave my minimum. I usually attempt to afford to leave something because they are trying to earn a living and they deserve something.
I tip generously all the time unless the waitstaff is horrible. I've been a server before and I hate it when people don't tip. They only make like 3 dollars an hour.

Over here as you may know, tipping aint compulsory (lot of the time they dont deserve it, miserable sods) but if the food & service has been realy good i leave 10-15%
I don't tip to impress company. The food doesn't play a real factor either as the waiter isn't the one that made it. If the waiter/waitress is attentive, courteous, and makes a valid effort to do things right they get it %-based.
The food is not a reflection of how well a job that a waitress/waiter does. If you don't like the food you have the right to say so and get something else.
I can appreciate good service because I was in this industry as well for 10 years. If the service is poor .... sorry but no tip. You are there to do a job... not just dump food on someones table, slam down the bill and then ignore them for the rest of the evening.
You are there to give the customer the best service possible and to make there evening enjoyable because that ensures that they will come back and they will ususally wait to sit in your section. Its all about providing service to ensure repeat business and also having fun at the same time.

i agree.why take bad food out on the server? she has nothing to do with the preperation.this is why i no longer do customer service.people always" shoot the messenger" so to speak.if the person gave you good service then you should reward it.if you got bad food talk to the manager.a good restaurant will credit your bill for a bad meal.
