They found out that they were going to have another child and were intent on making the transition as easy as possible on their little one. They explained in child-like terms what was happening and going to happen. Their daughter took it all in like the impressionable little sponge that they all are and things went on as usual. The mother started to show and they drew their little angel closer to her sibling encouraging her to communicate verbally and through tactile means.
The little girl decided out of the blue when the mother was in her eighth month of pregnancy to ask a simpe question. "Mommy, when the baby is born can I have some time alone with it?" The parents were pleased to see that their daughter was accepting of the soon to be newcomer to the family. Over the next few weeks, her demand (for that is what it quickly became) was on autopilot and her mood seemed to sour as she expressed her need to be alone with the newborn.
The parents studied her reaction and growing impatience with some concern, and spoke to a few knowledgeable persons on the matter. They were advised to be cautious because sibling rivalry is a gentic trait found in all living mammals. The parents grew a little more concerned with her demands growing more tantrum-like and went to seek professional guidance. They were told to allow the contact to be exactly as the little girl wished, but with precautions. They purchased a baby monitor, and a tiny camera in a teddy bear. Feeling secure, they acceeded to their daughter's wishes and with their acceptance her demands grew more docile and bearable.
Finally the baby was born, and the day came for the little boy to come home. Immediately upon entering their home, their daughter began to demand her promised time alone. Finally the baby fell asleep and was placed in his crib for a good sleep.
The daughter waited patiently, even past her regular bedtime and when she heard her baby brother wake up she became relentless in her demands for her promised time alone. The parents a little nervous but eager to see the fruition of this ultimatum, let the little girl go and see her brother. She looked back at them huddled in the doorway, smiles and closed the door behind her. The parent's immediately raced to the television to watch what happened and turned the monitor up to full blast.
The little girl looked back at the door seeking assurance of her privacy, and began climbing the side of the crib. He immediately quieted, and she leaned her body over his frail little form. Pushing her face close to her brother, she whispered in his ear "David, please tell me what God looks like, cause I've been gone for so long now that I can't remember!"
The little boy inable to communicate in any meaningful (at least to us) form just remained quiet as his sister hugged him and climbed down from his crib. She looked back and smiling opened the door and ran to hug her parent's who by now had the strangest look upon their faces.
Since that day they have found a deep inner peace and spirituality and neither complains the least about that missing itch they once shared.
