My buddy just hooked me up on another site, said I sould look for people who share the same interests as I do. I like the Forum here, but does anyone out there Scuba Dive, or Kayak? I Dive more than anything but just wondering Posted this in the Florida Forum but no one is there LOL
I'd love to learn to Scuba dive. Unfortunately, I have a big fear of sharks. One would see me scuba diving and decide that I look like a very tasty seal.
I'm fascinated by the ocean and sharks in general so scuba diving would be fun....BUT, I'd have to get over my fear of sharks first though. Right now I, silly me, stay in prime shark bait territory when I visit the ocean, 3 feet of water in full view of the shoreline. I figure I have a better chance of getting to shore in shallow water than in deep water.
When I was in Corpus Christi, TX a view years back a guy pulled one out of the water and hauled it up on the pier; it was a little one maybe 5ft at the max. I was fascinated by it. Beautiful creature, but obviously it wasn't too happy being out of the water. I stayed clear of the ocean the rest of my visit after that though. I saw its teeth, so every scene of JAWS ran through my head after that!
Omaha, Nebraska not a great diving area IMO Texas should be good though, as long as its summer time, waters warm that way. Never dove there, but the gulf is wonderfull
Yeah, I know. I want to move to Corpus Christi some day though. Not much around here for scuba diving other than the river and its so darn muddy you can't see a thing in it. Though the zoo has the shark tank that they'll allow certified divers to get in there and feed the fish.
I'm not afraid of sharks but I don't think I would jump in a shark tank myself Florida has great spots.. The Keys are fantastic, west coast of Florida has some fresh water caves that are really cool to.

Not me...my best friend died while learning to dive...her family blamed the trainer...her son was 9 then and he witnessed her go under and never to come back...they found her body 3 days later
Uncanny thing is, he loves to scuba and lives in Florida...he is 23 now and says he finds peace in the ocean..no doubt her spirit is with him
I love most things that have to do with water including diving. Haven't had to much chance to dive in the last 5 years. I did quite a bit of open cave diving (love the freedom of it) and of course diving in the ocean. In South Africa we are lucky enough to have access to both a cold and a warm marine environment with lots of wrecks scatterer all over - thus all sorts of interesting diving. I tried deep diving a few times but decided to give it up after a friend died during such a dive. I now limit myself to 25m
This is where most of the incredible beauty of reefs are to be found in any case.
One hilarious event happened while I was diving with a trainee - a small girl taking her first dive on a reef at about 15m average. She was instructed to stay within arms length to my right and slightly behind so that I could see her when I tilted my head. This she did with wide eyed wonder at this newly discovered beauty. Suddenly she shot past me and her terrified eyes seemed to fill the mask. I caught her by the flipper and pulled the struggling girl back and just then the object of her terror swam past - a potato bass that is a foot longer than the girl. It was a well known and inquistive inhabitant of this particular reef but nobody mentioned this to the girl. The result is that the girl emptied a 10l tank of air in just over 20minutes - she really gulped it down and apparently she didnt appreciate my wide grin. Luckily she went back and eventually became good "friends" with the fish.
They have some reefs here just off the shore in like 12 to 24 feet of water, get to them by beach dives. Alot harder but think I'm gonna try this year.
As you say - entering through the surf is a bit more taxing. Did that when I was young but I stick to entry from boats now a days. Have a friend who lives in Mauritius who owns a 40ft cat. I intend visiting and diving with them in the real near future.
