I realize the population is growing everyday and people need places to live but must they take everything and put concrete on it? Where I come from in IL, they opted to put farmers out of business for the rich people from Chicago wanting to escape. They build subdivisions like crazy. There is a wholesale food store named ALDIs and the rich snooty people complained because they wanted to build it next to the subdivision..lol. What is the difference? They are surounded by shopping stores anyway? The richest soil in the US was in DeKalb County in IL and now it is concrete. Makes me ill actually. Do we really need craploads of fast food and stores when there are plenty in the vicinity already? In Eau Claire there is lots of nature left and they seem to keep the development clustered and not just build because there is an empty spot.

I see two issues here

Residential sprawl

We have that problem going on here too. The problem is not the spread of cities and towns but the wastefull use of agricultural land. Most new home sights near me(southern michigan) are 5 to 20 acres per sight. While that makes for very nice building sights it is incredibley wastefull.

Commercial sprawl

This one is easy to solve. Push the minimun wage to a living wage and institute mandatory health coverage for all employees. We don't need nearly the number of retailers/vendors we currently have. Their profit margin exists in their ability to use cheap labor. Destroy the profit margin created by under-employing people and the unnecessary businesses will disapear.

they paved paradise, put up a parking lot.....

I agree with your point but I also support it within reason. Major urban centres are sprawling to accommodate all the "peoples" and all the services for all the new neighbours.
I grew up in Vancouver and left in 97. At that time commuting was irritating at the best of times. Used to be the traffic was evident about 80 kms away - Abbotsford. All within a few years the traffic congestion was obvious in Hope - about 150 kms. WOW
That to me indicates that very soon the public will be crying for more highways, more lanes. Eating up more of the natural green spaces.
I don't think its avoidable - we creatures who consume and waste blindly. Yes, I know there are a lot of conservationists doing their part but the ratio is not even.

Did you know that from a satellite there are only a few places on earth that aren't illuminated by some form of lighting - streets, cars, homes. buildings.

What to do? Move to another planet and don't leave a forwarding address....

It has other issues such as illegale labor. Most of the work being done is by other countries here. We are led to believe that it is jobs we don't want to do. No children want to carpenters, cabnet makers. If this is true what a shame.

WHAT???? That isn't true..lol

You think they want to work at Mc Donalds driveup??...lmao

US sells out to other countries is more like it. What you talk about is the greed of Corporations wanting low labor costs. They wreck the economy big time.

As far as the illegals...they are basically that.."ILLEGAL" and have no business here.

eliminate a farmer for a golf course... who thinks this benefits a community?
I reside outside Detroit, MI and there are so many empty buildings vacant factory sights, but they talk of bulding this factory and commericvail development in rural areas. Even invoke "imminent domain". So many politicains used this exact argument when wanting to be elected. its a raping of our land and communities. I heard that every metropolis instruct all public transportation to take more scenic routes when big events occur..so as not to show what really is going on with in the city....to many empty buildings and factories and storefronts on this road...use alternate route.......American Businesses are the most wasteful and destructive of natural resources in the world..
like children...they do not want that someone else had it first.

I guess it is a fact of life Lene' this urban sprawl issue. I see it happening here to, I keep scratching my head wondering where all the people are coming from to purchase these new homes and such. The population of Canada has not really increased all that much in recent years. Yet they build and build..

I guess they must be coming from the rural areas. I know I myself came from farming parents, and I would have loved to farm, but unfortunetly it was not economically feesable for me to do so.

I think we as North American's had better start thinking about ruining all the farm land with housing developments. I think if it continues we are not going to be able to feed ourselves. I don't think I would want to depend on other countries to feed me. He who feeds you can also starve you.
