No matter what religion on chooses, practicants can be found who swear it works for them. How can this be, when they are so different?

It´s comfortable to put your trust in a dieties hand. That way you can pospone difficult decisions in to the future. And sometimes things actually do work out by it self, and your prayers where heard so to speak.

I think the "power" lies in the belief, more than the religion itself. People in general feel incomplete within themselves's, and it's much easier to look to an all-powerful entity than to explore ones' own mind and find the missing pieces on their own.

Bienvenue, joovist and order. I agree, yet there's more. All religions' practicants express supernatural, miraculous results, many of which can more or less be proven or at least witnessed by other, non-believers.

How does it work?

I agree with order2chaos

Besides, what is the criteria for a religion to 'work'?

Atheism seems to 'work' for a lot of people too.

Ok, with that criterea, I would say, that maybe "God", in whatever form the beleiver finds him, is just a focal point for our own ability to effect the tings around us. That that power can be found in each person, but in most the ability is
underdeveloped and it needs an outside focus. Maybe being the key word here. Mind over matter, so to speak.

All right, the heavy-weights are arriving! Love ya, Abra!

Atheism is NOT a belief system, so it only 'works' to the extent that people live without a belief system.

I am part of no religion, but I see that it works. I don't ever see ghosts, but many people I love and respect have and do. They just never will at the same time I'm with them.

Many peple believe in communism and capitalism, and they work, too (though perhaps not Marxism and certainly not Stalinism; I mean the communism of the family and monasteries, etc.)

Why is it that what we believe works?

This is what I consider close to it. The universe is perecisely what we perceive it to be, a fact physicists are having trouble with but are testifying to. So, you find what you look for, right?

Taking silence for consent, let me continue (how can you stop me, you ask?).

OK! Since it is faith itself that works, as is asserted by ALL the great teachers, how about we decide to believe in something really new? Why don't we just join hands, or at least minds, and leap into a totally new universe entirely of our desiring?

After all, that's what we're doing now!

I would have to think even athiests have a belief system too but maybe it only entails things that can be seen and heard. We usually believe what has been proven to us to work.

You're right. I was using a strict definition of belief system. Of course, most people describing themselves as atheists practice the 'golden rule'; they believe very fervently, sometimes, in things like fraternity and solidarity. But that isn't usually included in the definition of 'belief system'. So, you are certainly correct. My wording may have been too narrow.

I think people who don't believe just don't have the ability in their minds to believe in something they cannot logically understand. Doesn't make them wrong or right it is just the way they are wired. Maybe their authorities are other people such as people they idolize?? They are their own higher powers? I dunno?

On the other hand..no matter how much faith you put in someone or something if you don't believe in yourself you set yourself up to fail anyway.

People work for something they believe in. Right now, people believe in money. But what value does money have? Only what we believe it to have. It has no intrinsic value. The exchange rate floats all over the place according to the faith investors have in a currency. Money is a perfect example of faith at work.
