What drives you on to achieve? What goals do you have for yourself?

Why have you come to certain conclusions regarding your aspirations?

Do you believe the society you currently live amongst is geared towards personal fullfillment and some sort of happiness?

I've just finished devouring a delicious chocolate eclair...and it got me thinking you see...daydream

My children drive me. They are everything to me. I want to be the best mother possible, and protect them from everything, although I know I won't be able to protect them forever, I will be there when they need me, no matter what they do. I am dreading my first broken heart, but I will be there with tea and sympathy, and a warm motherly hug for them when it happens.

Society is far too hooked on personal fulfillment. Yes, we should look after number one a lot of the time, but we should also give thought to others who need us. We all need happiness, and sometimes the smile of a stranger can bring that little bit of happiness into our lives.

Now I am going to raid the fridge. This talk of chocolate eclairs has made me need chocolate!

grin (for everyone who needs a little happiness today)

I have spent a good deal of my life torn between MY goals and aspirations and helping others reach THEIR goals.

Personally, I'd like to finish up my Master's degree, maybe even go on for my doctrate. I'd like to get some writings published. I'd like to finish up raising my son so he goes on to college as well.

Hrm... everytime I try to go back to school though, someone lands in my life who needs me. My Father grew terminally ill so I cared for him. An abused teen came along who needed help so I took him in temporarily. A friend went through a divorce and needed a lot of help, so I helped her. Now I have a young couple dependent on me because they are homeless.

I never really pegged myself as a big time care-taker, but it seems like I'm a magnet for people who need help. I keep saying to myself "Well, once this person gets on their feet, I'll have time to dedicate to going back to grad school." But then someone else needs help, so maybe it's my calling.

There was a time when I was driven towards having the means to possess more....a bigger home, a newer car, more clothes, etc. I never have had a lot, but have not been wanting for much in my life, either. But I was wrapped up in the materialistic drive that many people find themselves pursuing (not really even consciously at the time...it just seemed normal...keep up with the Joneses, etc.).
Now, however, I have totally different aspirations and have indeed reached conclusions along those lines. I work in a job that I greatly enjoy, but I work to enjoy the basic simplicities of life, not to buy designer bags or shoes or such. I enjoy sitting in a café and reading a good book, enjoying the view of the sea or the mountains. I enjoy the vibrancy of the life in the city where I live, and I enjoy the fact that I walk a lot here. I not only do not have a new car....I don't even own a car at all these days. I enjoy going out with friends and dancing to all sorts of music (rock one night, Greek music and dancing another night). I don't have to go to a popular place; I just need to be amongst good friends and to simply enjoy the very existence of the sensations around me (the music, good food, laughter...simple things).
So, I guess what I am saying is this...I accept that I will never have a lot of money. But my current aspirations and motivations are totally being fulfilled...enjoyment of life, freedom inside (now that I am no longer chasing something always out of reach), and the inner peace that comes with living a simpler life....simple but rich with friends and music and beautiful surroundings....and, if not an eclair, at least the occasional decadent delight!

Funny u should ask that question.. flatmate and I spoke of similar today...

Personally I don't think the society we currently live in is geared towards personal fulfillment, because so much is geared to is what is outside ourselves, and in many cases what is outside our reach, I think this is what ultimately fuels consumerism. Like e.g. the way magazines project 'perfection' in such an unattainable light...

I think individuals can achieve happiness but it ultimately has to come from within... that is not to say that happiness is a purely self generated thing, but it has to begin from within.. trying to aspire to society's expectations would leave us perpetually coming up short hug

I'm dreaming and thinking a lot lately and about where my life is going ............ are my dreams and goals for me, my family or just because I think I should do them and where did these ideas come from?

Sometimes I wonder if I know myself anymore .......... or am I truly knowing myself and just simply rejecting what I feel others are trying to mold me into?

The purpose of life. I have come to believe that the purpose of life is to live it in a way that is enriching. Early in life we focus on the details, achieving or accomplishing one thing or another, but in the broader view, all we are really doing is trying to live life in a way that causes growth, development, joy, love, excitement—enrichment. Whatever it is, having a family, helping others, being a good friend, education, career, having a nice home, travel, religion, these are all details. The purpose of life is to live it in a way that is enriching rather than cheapening it. By enrich I mean: Synonyms: adorn, aggrandize, ameliorate, augment, beef up*, better, build, build up, cultivate, decorate, develop, embellish, endow, enhance, figure in, flesh out*, grace, hike, hike up*, hop up*, jack up*, jazz up*, make rich, ornament, pad, parlay, pyramid*, refine, run up*, soup up*, spike*, step up, supplement, sweeten*, up*, upgrade The opposite would be to live life in a way that cheapens it: Antonyms: cheapen, degenerate, deplete, deprive, impoverish, reduce. (Thesaurus.com)

I have come to believe not so much in the details, but in the broader perspective. It isn’t failure if you started out with one goal and were diverted toward another, and one goal and achievement of that goal isn’t necessarily lesser than another. Some people think that as you get older, the ‘details’ become more limited, but this is not true. My life after 50 has been richer, more exciting, more interesting and more fulfilling than ever. There are things I will never ‘achieve,’ but there are other things, things that are enriching, interesting, exciting, wonderful that are part of life, if you are living it in an enriching way, no matter what stage of life you are in. I think the details confuse us, we get bogged down in them, we listen to what others/society tells us is important or necessary. It’s better to take the broader view.

If only we had all the answers to the questions we have.

Drive to achieve : An unstable wandering mind
The questions in my mind drive me everyday thro' everything material or otherwise in the hope of finding contentment and true happiness someday. I know it sounds a little serious and kinda crazy. But, it matters a lot to me to be at peace in my mind.

My goals i will not go in to details but will be reached this yr. Yes, they are purely material.
My aspirations , I wait for the right time.

Our society is definitely superficial and momentary happiness driven. Theres not much one can hope from the society apart from criticism or blind praise for the ones in the lead. Theres a lack of insight in to what really matters and is essential in life ultimately.

Purpose in life ????
I wonder Do we value our life enough ? Are we moving in the right direction ? Each day that passes by is another day off our lifetime.

I dont have an answer to this Detente !! I am still figuring it out.

Being aware of the issues...thinking...considering...mulling over...it all helps us to percieve our current state.

I was recently reading a book by Dan Millman "The Life You Were Born to Live : A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose".

You might remember an ancient Greek dude named Pythagoras from geometry class. The square of the hypotenuse is divided by the sum of the squares etc. He is often referred to as the father of mathematics.

Did you know that Pythagoras invented the 8 note "octave" that we use for sheet music all over the world today? The story goes that Pythagoras discovered that musical notes could be translated into mathematical equations when he passed blacksmiths at work, and thought the sound of their anvils being hit was beautiful and harmonious. He believed that whatever scientific law caused this to happen must be mathematical, and could be applied to music. He went to the blacksmiths to learn how this had happened by looking at their tools, he discovered that it was because the anvils were "simple ratios of each other, one was half the size of the first, another was 2/3 the size, and so on.

Pythagoras believed that the etire universe was a gigantic mathematical, musical symphany. In his mind and that of his followers everything had numerical value, even colors and emotions.

Millman's book is based on this ancient wisdom. Those who are into astrology, and believe that one's fate is somehow mystically intertwined with the stars will certainly appreciate it. A persons life purpose can be determined with a mathematical formula derived from one's date of birth on the standard Gregorian calender.

I'm always a little skeptical when I approach ideas that are new to me. But, the information that Millman presented matching my "birth number" really made an impression on me.

He gives the characteristics matching each birth number, from the perspectives of both positive and negative energies. He discusses the issues involed in each life path with health, relationships, etc.

Check it out if you're curious. It's really an easy read because you can skip alot of the parts that don't apply to your life path.
