I've gone out with multiple men that I've met online and I have a question. Why do men feel the need to be someone they really aren't?

Now now, be fair here, woman do the same things as men do. I don't think everyone even does it intentionally. Some people just don't know WHO they are yet and are insecure. They just hope for the best when the time comes for that face to face. Yes, some are liars and losers and fakes, but I honestly think most just want to impress and might think that they, as they are, wouldn't be adequate enough.

Two types of men come to mind here...

Devious men- They don't care if you like them for who they are. They just want to take the shortest path to their goal.

Insecure men- They want to be liked for who they are but don't give you the opportunity to do that because they fear you won't like them for themselves.

And as Joov pointed out..

All that we see passes through a filter of our own perception.

Not just men are like that. Lots of women are too.

But I prefer someone who can be themselves. I am not into those who try to be someone else to just impress someone.

I think because some men want to attract attention

and they trying to make themself to look better with saying all that good quality stuff I'm smart, intelligent, patient ...you know

It is like in the movie...a hero for an 1 and half hours ... but when you are in reality ...face to face ... movie is over and you are who you are...

I don't think you really know someone until you have met them in person, spent time with them and really see what they look like and do in their normal lives.

Words in a profile can paint a pretty picture and if a guy thinks he is smart and good looking, he may be...to himself and someone...but maybe not to you when you meet him.

I think some also goes way back in just mens genes...

It was loked upon highly to wear your meal, so to speak, to get the attention of the females you wanted...be it clans, tribes...
As with other animals, plumage, color, strutts, and dances...
Then, there are just jerks..lol

simply put how you interpet someone words when written and what they really are saying differs greatly. Think how many ways someone can actually say a simple phrase, now how many ways to write that same phrase. I am firm believer even phone conversations when you have not met anf talked to the individual can be deceiving. Not intentionally deceiving.

If you speak of misrepresenting themselves, some speak of times gone by, others speak of what they will be in time. and others are just plain liars...I like meeting these types it helps me to appreicate those that are sincere and real in their words. just an opinion

Funny thread... drop and drag, in the information age.....still like stone age...

Which is why I like Joanie....she says what is.

I think if you actually met someone, met their eyes and communicated with them....then all would be alright....

I don't see this as being about men at all.

I think there are *some* women who simply pass over the uninteresting pragmatic men in favor of the men who are making outlandish claims. Then when the women rush to those men they soon discover that those guys are nothing more than players putting on a show of EXACTLY what they know will attract a woman's attention.

Kind of like the cliché, "If it looks too good to be true it probably is"

I personally don't believe that most men are pretending to be something they aren't. Woman just typically don't bother with the honest men who present themselves in their boring reality. Instead they go looking for the flashy players, then they come running back screaming "Why are ALL MEN players".

Like duh?

I never claim to be something that I'm not. And normally women aren't tripping over each other to get to me either.

Recently I have been experiencing some interest from women. What sparked it I'll never know. Maybe the powers that be are at work and my number's coming up. ;o)

In any case, I'm certainly not pretending to be something I'm not. On the contrary I try to make myself appear worse off than I really am just so the woman will have some surprises left when we do meet in person. :o)

We certainly can't use Abra as an example of the average guy. I would still be surprised if any guy could say that he's never done this even as a boy/man. We usually have to learn to stop.
