On Friday my daughter and I were stopped at a light when a car came up behind us and ran right into the back of us. She said she had looked behind and he had stopped but was on the cell phone, and next thing she knew he just ran into her.
What is your opinion of driving while talking, should it be against the law?
rwantin: The guy/gal that could kill me talking about Friday's party....
Yes he was a young guy in his late 20, by the way he ended up leaving before we could get his information. The police were too tied up so we went to the station, he said he would follow, just as we turned in he kept going.
There have been laws passed in some areas making it illegal to talk on a mobile phone while driving, in Dade County, FL a driver can get a ticket for it, but not in any other county, before I left there had been talk of making it a statewide law.

A whole bunch that I have seen should not be driving period...
I think it's stupid and causes alot of accidents.Even though we're living in a busy world,I THINK it's hard to do two things at once, and to do them both well........and that 's why accidents occur.

I agree with you, it is not your driving but the other person you have to look out for
Kind of like drinking and driving,I think there will have to be alot of proven cases of deaths DUE to talking on cell phones and driving, before anything gets REALLY DONE,IF ANYTHING GETS DONE.
Like anything else,it usually takes a TRADGEDY,BEFORE ANY ACTION IS TAKEN.

The skill of the average driver on a cell phone or legally drunk is almost the same - several studies have proven this. At least California goes hands-free in July. Not that it will help much...
Nebraska just passed a law that teenagers cannot be on a cell phone while driving. Automatic suspension of driving priviledges.
Personally to me, though, I can multitask enough that I can talk and drive at the same time and have automated features. Voice activated dialing, speaker phone or hands free device. To me, its no different than talking to the person next to me in the passenger seat.
Of course, I have known a few people who were all over the road when they used their cell. Its kind of like walking & chewing bubblegum, not everyone can do it.

Well, I think it makes a big difference driving hands free and driving with hand holding a phone up to or in front of your face. I don't have any problems talking to someone while I drive (keeping my eyes forward - don't believe in glancing at the person frequently), but I have noticed lapses in concentration holding a phone with one hand near my face.
If you can have a hands free phone, then maybe you can talk while driving, but depending on the type of conversation you are having I believe it takes more concentration to talk on the phone then to a person next to you. You have to listen more closely to what is being said on the phone.
Studies cite virtually no difference between hands-free and holding a phone (other than of course physically dialing, etc.). The reason is, at least what they say, how our mind works. You try to visualize the other end, try to determine expressions, etc.
Anyone ever see the Mythbusters episode where they tested the theory of drunk driving vs. cell driving? Not related to the studies I am mentioning, but they drove better bombed...
