Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.
The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week.
The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x ray, which isn't reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for a month from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients?
The FIRST is a Golden Retriever.
The SECOND is a Senior Citizen.(Next time take me to a vet! WOOF)
This must have been hiding!
In Barbados we have free health care. Going to the clinics is time consuming because of the volume of people but the standard of care is generally high and it is free.
Two years ago when my heart took a hop skip and jump (totally unrelated to a hot guy unfortunately) the ambulance, emergency room care, X rays and follow up were all free.
You can invest time or money. It is easier for retired people and stay at home mothers to invest the time; but unless you have an emergency it takes weeks to get a doctor's appointment if you are paying.
There are problems with the system, of course and the main hospital has issues that must be addressed in terms of staffing etc. - there are times when paying customers have to wait for a bed.
Sad way for things to be though, when a vet visit is easier than a doctor's visit.
I can't comment on the situation in the situation overseas, but locally we've got free healthcare also. The problem is that sometimes it takes months from the first appointment till the surgery, if this is required. One can always opt for a private hospital, where the procedure will be carried out earlier. Obviously, one has to pay for the services at a private hospital, but if any problems crop up, one would still end up in the state hospital for cure and recovery, as the latter is much better equipped.
