Most countrys only claim control of 100 miles (beyond their coast)of the ocean (I think china claims 200). That area is controled by most countrys and enforced a little.
Our oceans are being over fished, tainted, abused and if you are familiar with the 'great trash heap' or the pacific version of that then you'll know that our oceans are in grave danger.

To answer your question the reason is profit without concern for our children.

Over fishing eliminates "a living" for others, perhaps eventualy for all.

Two years ago.Alot has been done since then, but probably not enough.
I always practice catch and release.Take a photo.Taxidermists use styrofoam now and the fish looks great, and just like the one in the photo sent.
I only have two mounts, Didn't practice release then.Arctic grayling and an 8 pound walleye.Always wanted a 20 pound pike. But then the list grew and you are chasing the world for trophies,so i stopped with that thinking.
The Walleye was caught in Lake Erie. It's still a mess of a lake as the locals would not eat fish from that lake.It is however not the "dead lake ",anymore that it once was known as.

No ocean or sea fishing stories.Wish i did.SOME DAY.

ANYONE HERE HAVE FISH STORIES?(REAL ONES)! !!!lol

From the article:
"When you removed the oysters through overfishing, that's when you begin to see a rapid decline in water quality," Lenihan said. "What it's done is change the entire production of the bay."

Marine advocates, such as chief scientist Michael Hirschfield of Oceana, said they hope the report would spur countries to reassess their practice of providing roughly $20 billion a year in subsidies for harmful fishing practices.

"The single biggest thing we can do to address this is to eliminate subsidies," said Hirschfield, adding that European Union countries alone account for 10 percent of these subsidies.

This is depressing.

Some estimates say as much as 90 percent of edible marine fish may disappear by 2048.

Why stop at the oceans?

We seem to have sucked, bulldozed, burnt, built over, and in general taken as much as we wanted, craved for or 'needed' from the entire planet.

Not just our seas.

We are only now startign to realise it is no longer sustainable.

Maybe it's not too late yet, however the signs are there for us to see.....

Unfourtuinatly part of the problem is that people are saying that they could care less because' i'll be dead then'.

There are problems now: kepone, DDT, steroids, and PVC's (plastics). This crap is in the food you eat right now. That is not mentioning all the added crap that is put in your food (you know,, the stuff on the label you can't pronounce).
There is a problem, for years we thought the ocean was vast enough that we could use it as a toilet, but its not that big. There is a dead zone in the golf of mexico from phosphers runoff. there are also trash heaps the sise of texas in the pacific and atlantic ocean. There are frogs dieing in
Africa from birthcontrol in the water(do they use birthcontrol drugs in Africa?)

Farm fish are usualy pumped full of steroids and antibiotcs to protect the harvest and investment. I would not clasify that as eatable (that wich is in them is what you eat).

Dennis , (nufrant for now)

I fish all the time here in Jersey mostly saltwater and we have regulation to control this on our coast....

2008 Marine Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary Sheet (pdf, 116kb)
Color version (pdf 239kb)
2007 Marine Issue of the Fish and Wildlife DIGEST (published in May) Regulations remain in effect until changed.
2008 Commercial Marine Fishing Regulations (pdf, 116kb)

NOTE: Many marine species are managed on a coast-wide basis with seasons and limits required by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. They then must be approved by our state's Marine Fisheries Council. The Council usually addresses these issues at their March meeting with the management measures being effective in mid- to late April or early May. The Marine Issue of the Fish and Wildlife DIGEST is published in May.
For information on current or pending salt water regulations, watch this page and our homepage for news releases. Marine Fisheries staff can be contacted at 609-748-2020.
