I think its connected to familiarity - if you have grown up usung something as a first language, its more deeply embedded in your subconscious and almost automatic.
I was discussing something similar with a friend the other day about somebody we know who grew up using a different language and although her english is pretty good now, and a lot of even her thinking is done in english, she still thinks numbers in her native language
