free to do business, make a profit, make a lot of money unless it is illegal. Making progress you have the opportunity to buy the things you like and do all the things you enjoy. But what exactly are those things? What do people want? What do they fight for? What do they live for?

For me it's nothing tangible...It's the intangibles I fight for...like Justice...I am not a material person in the least!!!!!!!

I think the fight is mostly gone from people now unless its in armies - I hope I am wrong..........
I do have the opportunities you noted...to buy things I like and to do things that I enjoy. But I gravitate more towards the latter (doing things I enjoy) and I care less and less about buying things anymore. I have enough "stuff" in my life; now I prefer to fill my life with simple pleasures (reading, a seaside drive, leisurely coffee at an outdoor cafe on a beautiful day, visiting a museum or archeological site).
As for what I want, what I would fight for, what I live for... love, my children, me. In that order???? You decide.
So much of it depends on what stage of your life you are in... when I was younger my priority was to create a safe and secure environment for my daughter, to give her a home she was proud to bring her friends to and the financial security to allow her to explore all of her options in schooling, hobbies, activities etc.
Now that she's grown and on her own... the only value money has for me is the freedom it gives me to do what I want... to travel, enjoy a meal out with friends. I'm not into stuff anymore, it just ties you down!

they fight for recognition of their value. Some people's value is reflected in their assets; some in their strenght, some in their rhetoric...i live to make myself and the ones i love happy. My happiness is to have a great husband with whom i can have long walks and stop to drink water and kiss while on holidays plus being able to work in what i like.

I've done my share of chasing after the dollar for the purpose of being able to afford a better life. I've only recently discovered that all the money in the world doesn't make you happy. I should have concentrated more on enjoying life instead. I'm glad I figured that out before it was too late and now try to enjoy life as much as I can.

My flatmate has just come back from Berlin... and is deeply respectful of.. and inspired by Eastern Germans... he finds them unique and more 'evolved' than other Europeans by virtue of what they went through... they were a wealthy Communist Country.. had all their material needs met yet were compelled to risk life and limb for their freedom... freedom of speech, thought and expression.. I think sometimes we don't really appreciate the significance of these things..
At the moment the developed world thinks it is free.. but is it really?... our thoughts and views are being manipulated on a daily basis by advertising and media... and we are on a threadmill... if the rug was pulled beneath us tomorrow.. what would we be left with
