(In one episode of 'Cheers', Cliff is seated at the bar describing the Buffalo Theory to his buddy, Norm.... (I don't think i've ever heard the concept explained any better than this...)
Well you see Norm, it's like this.......A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now,as we know,excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Hey - I am really a red wine drinker.....I drink wine at home and beer when out (except for a meal out then I drink wine.....today Jacko and I gently quaffed a bottle and a half of merlot while Angie gulped down some rose followed by some vile concoction that looked and tasted like 'lemsip' .....come to think of it we all had one beer first, then the wine then we all had two 'lemsip' thingies.....no wonder I feel a bit 'iffy' tonight!)

I prefer wine in winter and beer in summer
as to the benefits of alcoholic drinks, wine is good for your health and so is beer but of course one thing is to have a drink and the other is having an overdose.
as to the theory of the slow brain cells, well, if alcohol kills the slowest cell, there will always be another slower cell and then if you go on, soon there will be none as the fast ones become the slow ones
