Hi Interflite

Their responsibility is to provide security and stability in the area, supervise, possibly with assistance and provide advice and protection for the massive aid effort that is in effect.
I think our boys are doing a terrific job, that more people should have faith in our government. I along with everyone else mourn for those that are lost and sometimes believe that it is not our place to be out there but these guys must be recognised in serving our country and government as only they know how.
I think it is detrimental to our soldier’s effort to go against the decisions made because if everyone thought that way we would have no order or patriotism.
Just a girl’s meagre opinion

hi esperella .
its nice to see your patriotism.

but haveing served out in Vetnam. c/o the australian army hence dual nationalality. i served along u s troops. Who in turn as i did did not KNOW why we were out there.

We all know the outcome of that involvement. and the loss of thousands of good men.

And the annilation of thousands of innocent vietnam ppl.

Luckily prime minister HAROLD WILSON refused offering support

to the United states in trying to police the troubles of this world.

And saved many brit soldiers. Afganistan. however long we stay there at the sacrifice of our men will still be a nation of poppy growers.

Never forget that the RUSSIANS walked away in the End. We are nom longer a super power. and we must take a stance from being dictated to by America.

Hi there.

Yes we complain when we hear another service person dies, weather it be in Afghanistan or Iraq. And yes, i agree that in vietnam troops did not know what or why they were there.
But you can not compare the two, that is Afghanistan and Vietnam. The reason being the task of troops is clear cut. It is two build the nation up again after many years of strict religious law under the Taliban. It is to free people so they can live a better life and be able to bring there children girls as well as boys into a free world where they can make choices for themselves. The only reason that this has not been achieved is that militants from other radial countries have come into Afghanistan and terrorized the population. It is now our troops duty to protect the Afghanistans against these factions. If we pulled out there would be a bloodbath with the end result of the Taliban regaining power and reversing all the work that has been done so far.
This of course is my own personal view. A solders duty is to obey orders and i think most of our service men and women over there see this as there duty to push the enemy out of Afghanistan and free the people.

They're my views as well Chriss, well said. While they have armies of willing young people to do their bidding they will never get the hang of negotiating.

Too many young lives are being lost because the politicos have lost the plot and dont know how the heck to go about negotiattions - as long as we allow our children to join their armies this will continue.

To hell with patriotism in this instance - they aint gonna get their hands on any of my boys

Are soldiers are obviously in afganistan because they love it ! They would not have joined up if they did not enjoy war ! I have friends in army & marines who would be very bored and dissapointed with there job if there was no war. No one puts a gun to there head and forces them to join the forces, do they ! Perhaps you should find a hobbie as you are obviously very bored with life ! + nothing you think or say is going to make any difference.very mad

they gun at their heads is a metaphorical one and in the form of patriotism - or the other one is that its a seemingly good escape route from a society where there are hardly any jobs and even less chances of one with any prospects - yes, people do get bored but is that really a good enough excuse to to want to go to war ?

yes CHRISS and TRISH123 have hit the nail on the head.

As a Nation we hav.nt got a pot to piss in. We can.t even affordmedication to ppl dying of cancer. Yet when the United states finds fault with another country. We allow ourselves to get involved.

What about the spin that IRAQ had weapons of mass destruction.

propaganda. The united states wont intervene in the genocide taking place in the palestinian ppls persecution by ISRAEL. a country bank rolled by the United states.
Who supplies them with aircraft tanks and military equipment. then they attack a defenceless country who can only retaliate with suicide missions and stone throwing.

No if the United states wishs to police the world. LET THEM but dont involve US untiol we have that POT to PISS in
an ex squadie myself.

Thanks Interflite - there were some deaths recently in one of these wars, British young men were killed and their CO blamed it on a shortage of equipment - they had made the requests for this equipment and been ignored.

I also read some recent news about army recruitment officers going in to schools and selling their spiel to "low achievers" - disgusting if you ask me.

Is this what they are asking us to be patriotic to?????

They even used PRINCE play boy HARRY to convince the
the public that if he is out there so should YOU.
a typical PR stunt.

the same tactics were used in the first world war

are we that gullible????

I dont think Harry in Afghanistan/Iraq was a publicity stunt. After all, he had been over there for a period of time and the press knew about this but never made it public knowledge until one paper broke the 'promise of silence' (if you can call it that). I remember reading a while ago that Harry himself insisted on going to these dangerous places otherwise that would make him a hypocrite and he would be embarrassed to speak to his friends (his platoon at the time). If I remember correctly, there was a public vote about sending Harry over there and the majority came back with a resounding NO as he would place the rest of the team in danger. Still happened without the public knowing so not a publicity stunt in my eyes. If that one paper hadnt broke their silence, not one of us would have even knew about it.

To answer the original question though, its difficult to say our soldiers are over there. Sure, everyone thinks this is Americas war but lets take of the Union Jack blinkers, we are allies with the U.S.A. If the terrorists targeted the U.K and only the U.K, are you seriously suggesting that we would refuse help from our closest International friends.

I would be a hypocrite to say it pains me that our boys are over there as I have not lost one minutes sleep over this war. (If I had family or friends over there, then its a different story but I dont). Im probably setting myself up for some serious verbals here but Im being honest in admitting that the war doesnt play on my mind, although I do have every sympathy for the soldiers and familys concerned. Plus I realise, that these are the people who are making it possible for me to have a peaceful sleep, forget your John Smeatons, these are the real heroes of Today. I just find it hard to grieve for someone I dont know.

I agree with where you are coming from and like you said Harry signed up and wanted to go......and then the press let the cat out of the bag....But I do believe that both the CIA & MI6 are talking to the Taliban in secret, the same way as they (MI5/6) were speaking to the PIRA...

Not disagreeing with what you said, more curious. What makes you say that? What benefits or progress could possibly be made by talking to them? We (I say we, the allies) are trying to over-run the Taliban/kill Osama are we not?

You're last sentence about the MI5..........Im gonna have to show my ignorance here as I dont know about it, is that true or speculation?

there will always be conspiracy theories even if they don't exist, we would never even get an the smallest amount of information regarding people who may have infiltrated these organisations as to do so would be risking their lives. Also these rganisations are now split down into very small cells with limited contact between them all so the people who try to infiltrate will recieve less and less usefull information
